Long is the way and hard, that out of Hell leads up to light...
This article is about The Dark Pictures Anthology's third installment, House of Ashes .

The Well is the ninth and final chapter of Act 2 in House of Ashes and the sixteenth overall.

It is a cutscene and has no gameplay. The chapter focuses on Jason and Salim finding a big hole leading into the unknown.

Caves[]

Jason and Salim get out of the caves and find a huge hole leading deep into the ground with an emitting green light. Seeing the elevator cable, Jason comments that the archaeologists seem to go down the pit and Salim adds that they apparently didn’t make it out. Jason offers to use the elevator to go downstairs, but Salim refuses and asks Jason what happened to the archaeologists, to which Jason replies that they are soldiers, not archaeologists. Salim comments that their home is up in the surface while Jason tells him that there are vampires separating them from the above world.

The guys hear the roar of the approaching vampires. Jason commands Salim to get the elevator running quickly. Salim asks if Jason wants to fight the monsters in their own territory, before Jason claiming that he's been doing that since he set his foot on Iraq. Salim starts the generator and the elevator rises from the pit. As the vampires almost get to the guys (the vision of a vampire can be seen), Jason and Salim run into the elevator and descend down into the green pit.

Meeting The Curator[]

The player meets The Curator again. He claims that an ancient horror has awoken and is hungry for blood. He then briefs about the player's progress.

  • If everyone is alive, the Curator will say that Rachel has found her way back to the light and will congratulate the player, as well as warn them not to become complacent, because the group's lives are still hang by a thread.
  • If Eric died in Act 1 and Rachel is alive, the Curator will say that Rachel found her way back to the light, but unfortunately her husband wasn't there to welcome her back. He will also note that it's an acceptable loss, considering the circumstances.
  • If Eric died in Act 2 and Rachel is alive, the Curator will say that one returns to the light, while the other goes out forever. He will sympathize with the player for Eric's death, but also note that Eric cheated death once before back on that highway and that perhaps death finally caught up with him.
  • If Rachel is dead and Eric is alive, the Curator will say that she has found her way back to the light, but the darkness reclaimed her. He will also quote Book of Job — "The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away." He then adds that Eric won't win her back.
  • If Eric and Rachel are dead, the Curator will say that they were separated in life, but reunited in death.
    • If at least one of them died from running into the tripwire, he will also say that it's almost as if the player is trying to get them killed.

He will then mention Nick's possible death, stating that those taken by the abyss seldom live to tell the tale, and remark on the fragility of Jason and Salim's alliance, alluding to a possible betrayal. The Curator then says that while he does not aim to be rude, time is against the player and him, and says he will be there to meet the player's "charges", whether they survive the endeavor or die in the process. Before the player is sent back, a thunder flashes, revealing a skull on the Curator's face for a split second.

Trivia[]

  • This is the only chapter in the game that is a cutscene but does not take place at the start or end of the game.
