The Pit is a location in The Dark Pictures Anthology's third installment, House of Ashes.
Description[]
The Pit is a huge cave that is located at the bottom of the chasm at a depth of 394 feet. It is a pool of partially-congealed blood and has a statue of Pazuzu in the center. Bones and debris are scattered along the sides, along with items belonging to those who have fallen inside. At the end of the pit there is a narrow tunnel that leads to a cliff, which can be climbed to escape the chasm. There is also a water wheel behind a large opening that connects to the elevator.
The vampires regularly visit the pit to feed and search for fresh sacrifices.
House of Ashes[]
2231 BC[]
For four thousand years, the pit served as a kind of dump where people were thrown off as sacrifices. In 2231 BC, Gutians were thrown into the pit by Akkadians on Naram-Sin's orders to calm the angry gods. Evidently some Akkadians were thrown in as well, as a scratched Akkadian helmet can be found inside.
19th Century - 2000s[]
In this timespan, people caught by the local cultists were thrown into the pit so that the vampires would stop coming to the surface and eating their livestock. Such victims included Marie Vinay and Yves Paugam, one of whose identification can be found inside.
In 1946, The Hodgson Expedition stumbled upon the pit where they found human remains, which they wrote about. Some of their notes and papers can be found inside.
Main Story[]
Rachel, running with Eric away from Dar, falls into the chasm and ends up in the pit. While trying to escape, she is chased by a vampire, however, Rachel stumbles upon Clarice, who saves her and reveals that a vampire had dragged her down there. After escaping, the girls reach the cliff and escape the chasm.
