Long is the way and hard, that out of Hell leads up to light...
This article is about The Dark Pictures Anthology's third installment, House of Ashes .

The End is the unofficial epilogue of House of Ashes and the twenty-fourth chapter overall.

It is a series of cutscenes with no gameplay. The chapter focuses on the interrogation of the soldiers after their gone-wrong mission. This is the game's conclusion that can have many variations depending on the player's choices.

Camp Slayer[]

There are several variations, all based on who survived. The cutscene alternates between a debrief of the surviving protagonists and a dialogue between agents Brooks and Miller about what happened. If a character is dead, their corpse lies on the table in a body bag.

Credit Dialogue[]

At Camp Slayer, Miller is seen walking as he approaches Brooks in front of a door. After exchanging conversations about Miller's flight, they enter the palace which has now turned into a site for experiments. Brooks describes the situation as "chaos". A view of a parasite being extracted from a dead vampire can be seen. Brooks then tells Miller about the squad leader Jason, whom Miller comments "the best of the best".

  • If Jason is alive, he is interrogated by one of the agents, where he is enraged with the interrogation.
    • If Salim was saved, Jason states that he stepped back into "that hellhole" to save Salim and that he was worth five of them, before saying "Semper Fucking Fi" in rage.
    • If Salim was abandoned, Jason shows remorse that he left Salim to die in the caves.
    • If Eric was killed, the interrogator asks about Eric, which Jason angrily asks what about him and says that “Hell swallowed him”.
    • If Nick was killed, the interrogator asks about Nick, which Jason sadly says that he did not make it.
    • If Jason failed the QTE to avoid the collapsing fossilized creature in The City, he starts violently coughing, with Brooke and Miller revealing that he is doomed to die soon, but hopes that he lives long enough for experiments.
    • If Rachel was killed, the interrogator asks about Rachel, which Jason threateningly tells them to go and have a look if they make it out alive.
    • If Rachel turned into a vampire, Jason says that "only God can judge what happened with Rachel".
  • If Jason is dead, Miller asks for the cause of death.
    • If Jason was impaled with a spear, Brooks states that they extracted a Sumerian spear from his torso. Miller calls it "one for the history books".
    • If Jason had his throat ripped out, Brooks says he was bitten. Miller asks if he's infected, to which Brooks responds "not anymore".
    • If Jason was killed by vampires another way, Brooks tells Miller that the vampires tore him to shreds. Miller then gives a command to bag up his corpse.

Miller and Brooks then talk about the Americans cooperating with an Iraqi Republican Guard. Miller comments how he's dying to meet him before moving on.

  • If Salim is alive and was rescued with the group, he is seen being interrogated, where he demands to see his son, Zain. The interrogator then asks about the vampires and how he killed them with the pipe.
    • If he killed Eric, the interrogator reminds him of that.
  • If Salim escapes, Brooks says that he got away and he might be across the border by now which Miller is annoyed about.
  • If Salim is dead, Brooks tells Miller that he won't get much out of Salim, to whom Miller gives a command to bag him.

Brooks comments how the site of the vampires is carnage. Miller and Brooks talk about the survivors using dynamites, before moving on to Nick.

  • If Nick is alive, he is seen being interrogated as well. He is also enraged about the interrogation and talks about how there were so many vampires.
  • If Nick is dead, Miller comments how his testimony could have been valuable.

Miller talks about how the situation is like Winterfold all over again. They move on to Eric, whom Brooks comments him as their "in-house genius".

  • If Eric is alive, he demands his interrogator to take him seriously if they are going to contain the situation.
    • If Rachel died, Eric mentions that he is going to have to live with what happened as he holds his wedding ring.
    • If Rachel survived, Eric states that he survived and that he will do everything he can to make sure everything is set right.
    • If Rachel is in a cocoon, Eric states that whatever is inside Rachel is consuming her and she’s turning into one of those things.
  • If Eric is dead, Brooks comments about how Caelus has mistaken an underground temple as a weapon silo, before Miller calls Caelus "piece of shit system". Brooks says that the satellite is a lucky find for them, before Miller asks her if the death of Eric is her definition of lucky.
    • If Eric's throat was ripped out, Miller comments "that's quite the love bite".
    • If Eric was killed by vampires another way, Miller declines Brooks' offer to see the wounds and they hastily move on.
    • If Eric fell to his death, Miller wonders if there is more to it. Brooks responds that the answer to that died with him.
    • If Eric was shot to death, Miller remarks that "at least somebody here died normal".
    • If Eric died in a mine explosion, Brooks refers to it as a blue on blue. Miller assumes that he triggered the explosion while running for his life.

As they move on, a view on the aliens' fluid inside a canister labelled X-1172 can be seen. They move on to Rachel.

  • If Rachel is alive, wasn't infected, or if the parasite was extracted in Strange Aeons, she angrily tells Brooks and Miller if they believe her now and what are they going to do about the creatures below which Brooks and Miller tell her that she's lucky to be alive.
  • If Rachel was infected, cocooned, and found, she is seen being rolled away on a bed wheel and Brooks says that the parasite has been extracted to which Miller replies saying "lucky girl".
  • If Rachel was cocooned, but nobody survived the finale, or only Salim did but wasn't captured, the researchers are unable to find her and have presumed her to be dead, thus, leading to her remaining trapped in the cocoon, possibly forever.
  • If Rachel is dead, Miller asks Brooks if she has read her profile. Brooks says that Rachel could've gone far with her career if she wasn't dead.
    • If Rachel became a vampire, Brooks comments about her nightmarish appearance. Miller asks about the parasite, to which Brooks responds that it's still inside her.
    • If Rachel was killed by a vampire, Brooks says it looks like something out of a horror movie.
    • If Rachel killed herself with White Phosphorus or died in a mine explosion, Brooks notes that there is barely anything left to identify.
    • If Rachel was infected and then shot by Jason, Brooks states that her comrades had no choice but to kill her. When Miller asks about the parasite, Books says it's been extracted.
    • If Rachel died on the surface, Brooks mentions that and that "she was close". Miller jokes that she should have read the weather report.

After viewing all the interrogations, Miller and Brooks exchange conversations. Brooks claims that she won't get used to the job as she decontaminates herself. After Miller decontaminates himself, Brooks asks what Miller made from the situation. Miller claims that the world doesn't know about the incident and that the government has covered it up, before both of them move on and Brooks closes the door.

Deaths[]

Determinant[]

Rachel

  • If Rachel was previously cocooned, but all the remaining protagonists died, or only Salim survived but wasn't captured, she will be trapped inside the cocoon forever since the rescue team won't have any intel about it.

Trivia[]

  • This is the sixth chapter in which Rachel can die.
  • This is the only ending chapter in the anthology that does not have any on-screen deaths.
  • This chapter is very reminiscent of the credits sequence in Until Dawn, as that also featured the surviving protagonists being interviewed as the credits roll. What the protagonists say is also determined by who survived and what actions they took.
  • This chapter, along with The Devil in Me's The End, is not selectable on the chapter select menu.
