|
It's so good to have company. For a long time, I was on my own. I can barely recall a time when I wasn't here, watching over these tales. And what good are stories without somebody to experience them? This is a story about those who create, and the lengths they might go to for their art to be made pure. "Art" can elicit all sorts of reactions. Delight, inspiration, desire, yes...but also doubt, fear, dread... The way you react - the decisions you make - will affect this story. | The Curator talks about his loneliness and his new story. |

|
I can't interfere. That's very much against the rules. I can only observe what happens and record any significant events. | The Curator explains that this is a story about life and death. How many deaths will depend on your actions. He looks around nervously. He says his role is simply to record events. He mustn't overstep boundaries. He seems scared. The Curator gestures to the painting on the wall and gives information about Dark Pictures revealing possible futures. The Curator returns to study the book, preoccupied. The camera pans away to focus on a picture on the wall of the library. The picture shows a trial. As it becomes full screen it animates to life. |
| Briefing about Obols | ||
obols
|
Oh! Ever seen one of these? They're very old. People used to call them obols. They'd put them in the mouth of the recently deceased...to pay the 'ferryman'. Look out for them. You'll find them in the strangest places. I'll be happy to exchange any that you find. And I'll certainly make it worth your while. | The Curator asks about the 'obols'. Has the player been collecting them. He'd like to have those obols, but there are rules about them. They can't be given. They must be exchanged. |

He says is this the fate for the crew, or do you have the mettle and determination to keep them from this fate? |
| Offer of the first hint | ||

It would only be fair, at this stage, to offer up a little hint, to even the odds. What do you think? | The Curator suggests it would only be fair to help even the odds with a hint. |
| Reaction to acceptance | ||
hint_bothaccept
|
Let's take some inspiration from the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle... Apparently our friend, Herman Mudgett, was so enamored with Sherlock Holmes that he borrowed his surname. Hmm... Here... "He has a brain of the first order... He sits motionless, like a spider in the center of its web... But that web has a thousand radiations... And he knows well every quiver of each of them."[1] I hope that helps. | The Curator says sometimes it's about having the right tool for the job and making sure the right person has that tool when they need it. (Referencing the Screwdrivers importance in Trap) |

|
Did the hint I gave you earlier help? Perhaps you'd like another? | The Curator pauses and leans forwards. The Curator alludes that you've been played right into Du'Met's hands, with all the crew being split up. The Curator suggests it would only be fair to help even the odds with a hint. |
| Second hint | ||
hint_dog
|
Let's see if Sir Arthur can help us. This one is from "The Man with the Twisted Lip". Have you read it? You should. (The dog is unknown to the player at this point) (Erin didn't listen to the audio tape) |

Farewell. | The Curator says that it's the end. He tells the player goodbye for now. He says that we will meet him again and hints very subtly that the next game is in space. Fade to black. |
Meaning of hints and advices[]
- According to the developer note, the first hint alludes how the player controls inventory and how arrangement of items might affect fates of the protagonists, saving their lives or killing them. The Curator draws a parallel between Du'Met and the player, implying that they are "Sherlock Holmes and professor Moriarty".
- The Curator says that "Herman Mudgett was so enamored with Sherlock Holmes that he borrowed his surname". Sherlock Holmes is the famous detective from Arthur Conan Doyle's works. Sometimes he was investigating cases for Metropolitan Police or Scotland Yard. Hector Munday, who was inspired by H.H. Holmes and associating himself with the famous murderer, also was working for FBI. Hector took an alias "Granthem Du'Met", which is an anagram of "Herman Mudgett". Du'Met means "of police", because "Du" is French meaning "of" and "Met" is an abbreviation of Metropolitan Police.
- The Curator tells the player his hint, reading Moriarty's description from "The Final Problem". Professor Moriarty is archenemy of Sherlock Holmes. He is a criminal mastermind, who controls his own criminal organization ("web"). He never does something himself, he delivers his plans to the other people. Like Moriarty, the player sits motionless and plans, controlling the protagonists and trying to defeat their enemy — Du'Met. The Curator implies that the player must remember items in the inventory and give the right tool, screwdriver ("radiation") for the "job" (glass trap) to the right character, so the player will know, should the character press the button or not in the trap. Afterwards the character with the screwdriver will break the wall ("quiver").
- It was possible for Kate to be a bait instead of Jamie and press the button to save or kill Jamie in the glass trap.
- The second hint about trusty comrade points at Connie and his possible help, if the player decides to help him. The Curator adds the hint also refers to him, implying his ability to revive characters, which was cut from the game.
- The another variant of second hint about premature theories points at Erin's premature judgement of Charlie, which might be fatal for him.
