You are about to embark on a troublesome journey... a stormy sea. And at times you may find it difficult to know the right thing to do. But you should understand that there is no right... and there is no wrong. We are at times guided by our heart, and at other times our head. You see... we each make decisions according to our own moral compass... And then we have to live with those decisions... or die by them. Lost at sea, you must uncover the root of a growing horror in order to escape an abhorrent evil, and save the lives of five unfortunate stowaways. Success will depend entirely on the decisions that you make. Decisions made in haste. Made with the heart instead of the head... or vice-versa? Decisions that may take some time to reveal their... repercussions... But there are repercussions. There are always repercussions. | The Curator addresses the player to give an overview of the game. (Alternative introduction with the same script from the Halloween trailer) |

One of you is back to try again! Excellent. Everyone likes a trier! Excuse me for a moment... Hmmm. "Life is as tedious as a twice-told tale, Vexing the dull ear of a drowsy man."[1] True, if the story has been told fully, completely. But the truth of this story isn't fixed. Far from it. A story can change a great deal when told from the different perspective. A chance to walk in different shoes. Make fresh choices. Discover new things. I do hope you get the outcomes that you want. For the benefit of the other, let me explain a few things. I am The Curator... the guardian of all of these wonderful stories... and I have a very special tale for you to tell. |

| That's very brave of you. Just remember this: every choice you make matters. | The Curator leans closer. | |
| And if you choose poorly... | The Curator SNATCHES the moth from the air just as its about to blunder into the flame. | |
| Well. You only have yourself to blame. | The Curator uncups his hand and the moth flutters away. | |

You'll tread your own paths. Sometimes friends, sometimes enemies. | As the Curator talks, two MOTHS flit into view and start circling the candelabra. |
| Your choices will throw you apart, but like moths to the flame, you'll always circle back together. | — | |
| Choose wisely, little moths, lest your wings be burned. | One moth flutters into the flame and BURNS UP. | |

We'll speak again before...the end. | — |
| But I'll always be watching from beyond. | The Curator stands and walks to a picture on the wall. The painting is too dark to make out properly. | |
| My pictures offer glimpses of possible futures. Seek them out. When you stand at a crossroads in the story, think back on what you've seen on the way. | — | |
| — | The Curator walks back to the desk and picks up the candelabra. | |
| Remember that each story you tell is different. No outcome is fixed in place, until you dip your pen for the final flourish. | — | |
| And by then it's often too late. | The Curator holds the candelabra up to the picture. | |
| — | The picture shows a U.S. military base in the heart of Baghdad. Underneath, a title reads: "CAMP SLAYER, BAGHDAD. 2003." | |

backstory
|
The Curator explains his backstory. He’s been working in the repository for a long time. Recording events. It’s a solitary existence. And a lot of book work, but he likes that. It’s important work. And then there was some sort of change and the Curator wasn't alone. There were people who visited him (the player) and helped with the stories that he was recording. The Curator liked this development. Something new, a bit of companionship. Of course there are rules... The Curator tells the player to look out for silver coins. These are called 'obols' They're very old. (Well, they mean a lot to him anyway.) They’re very old – ancient, in fact. The Curator mentions the custom of placing a coin in the mouth of the dead. These silver coins can be found all over the player if you look for them. |

The Curator explains that the outcome is in your hands. He can only offer observations. The Curator pushes aside the open book and from his drawer takes out a worn leather journal. He opens it to reveal that it is actually a tablet carrier. The screen lights up with a headshot of Kate. He taps the image. The Curator explains that this is a story about life and death. How many deaths will depend on your actions. He looks around nervously. He says his role is simply to record events. He mustn't overstep boundaries. He seems scared. The Curator gestures to the painting on the wall and gives information about Dark Pictures revealing possible futures. The Curator returns to study the book, preoccupied. The camera pans away to focus on a picture on the wall of the library. The picture shows a trial. As it becomes full screen it animates to life. |

Demo Versions[]
Man of Medan[]
- In the Gamescom 2018 demo, The Curator can be only heard, he welcomes the player and tells them about consequences of their decisions. The script is similar to the Halloween trailer and the alternative introduction. The moral compass with different style is seen on the screen and the player must choose one option: EMOTIONAL (I tend to let my heart drive my decisions) or RATIONAL (I usually weigh up all the information before I decide).
- Hello... And welcome... Sometimes we are guided by our heart... and at other times our head. You see... we each make decisions according to our own moral compass... And we have to live with those decisions... or die by them.
- EMOTIONAL — I do hope you get the outcomes that you want.
- RATIONAL — You are about to embark on a troublesome journey... a stormy sea... and at times you may find it difficult to know the right thing to do. But you should understand that there is no right... and there is no wrong.

Trivia[]
Little Hope[]
- There is no "curator1" folder in the game, all sequences from the first meeting are located in "1976" folder with sequences from Family chapter.
- In the released game events of the chapter actually occur in 1972.
House of Ashes[]
- There is no "curator3" folder in the game files, although "curator1", "curator2", "curator4" and "curator5" folders are present. It could mean that developers planned to make five meetings for the game, but deleted the third meeting during the development, leaving only four meetings.
