South Pacific Wreck Site is one of the key locations in which The Dark Pictures Anthology's first installment, Man of Medan. It is an underwater area that contains the remains of a destroyed B-29.

Description[]

During World War II they built these suckers to cruise at the highest altitude possible while maintaining the ability to carry nuclear warheads and - Sorry. Yeah. Nerdburst.

The B-29 (or Boeing Superfortress) is a large military aircraft. Once used as a bomber plane, it had been converted to a rescue plane after World War II. Each wing has two screws and the fuselage is divided into three parts:

  • Cockpit. It comes standard with two pilot and co-pilot seats, a control panel and several glass panes on the front of the cockpit.
  • Main part. It contains several rows of bomb racks with lifeboats instead of missiles. There is a small area with a table near the cockpit.
  • Tail. There is a large pipe above the entrance to the main part.

Currently, the aircraft is a wreck, which, after several years of being under water, has become very rusty. It did not sink deep, allowing divers to explore it. The main part of the fuselage is partially discharged and full of holes, with protruding anti-aircraft shells. There are many dangling wires in the tail area.

The B-29 seconds before its takeoff.

Initially, the B-29 was intended to attack ground and naval targets by dropping air-to-ground weaponry, launching torpedoes, or deploying air-launched cruise missiles. However, the aircraft was redesigned for a rescue mission.

On June 22, 1947, having received a signal that SS Ourang Medan was caught in a storm, the plane departed from Conwyn Islands in search of it. Having found the ship, the plane drops the lifeboat to the sinking Wagner, after which it was shot by the hallucinating John Patterson. Subsequently, the B-29 crashed near the ship and all the passengers (Kowalski and two pilots) died.

72 years later, wreck is found by the protagonists using Brad's calculations. Julia and Alex dive in there and investigate the plane, pick up some items as souvenirs and find the Manchurian Gold document with the ship's coordinates attached to it. When the couple gets to the cockpit, the fishermen's boat run into the dive line that links the divers to the Duke of Milan, causing the plane's cockpit to detach and prompting Alex and Julia to surface.

On the ship, Julia falls into the water and loses consciousness. She again finds herself in a wreck, but without a swimsuit (product of her hallucinations). Sailing in a sunken plane, she finds the same corpse, but with Alex's face. Suddenly, he wakes up and Julia snaps back to reality.
