This article is about The Dark Pictures Anthology's fourth installment, The Devil in Me .

Scouting is the eighth chapter of Act 1 in The Devil in Me and the ninth overall.

The player controls Mark as he along with Kate find a good shot for the latter's picture. This chapter can be played fully only in Theatrical Cut.

Mark's Bedroom, 7:27 P.M.[]

Mark prepares his camera as Kate walks in and says she wants to start shooting. Kate questions his evasive behavior and brings up him turning down a previous job offer. Mark can insist it wasn't the right move or joke about not wanting to leave Kate with Charlie. As they prepare to leave, Kate says she wants to look good, and Mark can say Jamie will set up the lights or say Kate looks good in any light. Kate then asks why Mark is letting everyone think she is the one who broke up with him, and Mark says that they assumed before either asking whether he can say something or saying they should go. If he asks whether he can say something, he asks Kate not to psychoanalyze him but stick to the job, and after Kate apologizes he can either apologize as well or say the break-up is proving harder than he thought. Regardless, Kate thanks Mark for helping her, after which Mark teases Kate for her short arms. They leave his room and enter the corridors, where Mark can explore the second and third floor corridors to find:

  • A picture of Mark and Kate as a couple on the floor of Mark's room.
  • Kate's room. She tells Mark not to come in because her room is meant to be private.
  • A picture.
  • A mysterious room.

Eventually, they enter the library where Mark is scared upon walking past a grandfather clock. In the library, Mark can examine:

  • A window overlooking the courtyard. The man in the yellow raincoat walks past.
  • J. Morello Holmes Book.
  • A desk that has been carved into. Mark says he did the same in school.
  • A bookshelf. Mark can use his monopod to reach up and must do a QTE to catch the book that falls, though he can examine it regardless of whether the QTE is failed or not.
  • The door to the balcony. It requires a key.

Mark must enter two adjacent, unfinished rooms and perform puzzles involving climbing up and down ladders and pushing bookcases to progress into the locked room with the key. In the first room he can find a secret, and in the second room he can find five obols.

Upon unlocking the balcony door, Mark looks down into the lobby and experiences vertigo. Kate begins doing her makeup, and Mark can ask what she's worried about since she looks fine or say he thought they were in a hurry. He can then explore the balcony to find artifacts from previous Holmes victims, with one of the items reflecting what Jeff chose at the pharmacy in the prologue, and Holmes' hat. Upon interacting with Holmes' hat, a mannequin pops out, scaring Mark. Kate runs over and the mannequin moves, scaring them both. The two of them hear Erin calling Charlie out of the bar for dinner, and Kate laments that they didn't get anything.

3rd Floor Balcony, 7:50 P.M.[]

Note: This segment is skipped in Curator's Cut.

As Kate and Mark walk along the balcony, Mark and Kate argue about Kate being rude to Charlie. Kate insists that their conflict is Charlie's fault, and Mark can empathize with her or say everyone is tired of watching them fight. Kate then says she can't say half of what Charlie writes and he refuses her help. Mark can be bitter toward Charlie or say that he is acting how all directors must. Kate says she is moving on from Lonnit Entertainment regardless, and Mark can either support her or be disappointed that she is moving on without him. Kate says that they deserve better from Charlie.

Charlie then appears from the lobby, either casually calling Mark and Kate down for dinner or revealing that he was eavesdropping and either berating Mark for siding with Kate (if Mark sided with Kate), or saying he will talk to Kate later (if Mark did not side with Kate). In Theatrical Cut, he is casual if Mark did not side with Kate and hostile if Mark sided with Kate. Mark is annoyed with Kate and tells her he no longer has a future.

In another room, the Kate mannequin is shown, with a man taking a new mannequin head and sewing something into its eye sockets.
