Scarborough Fair

Scarborough Fair is the song featured in The Dark Pictures Anthology's second installment, Little Hope. It is a rendition of the traditional English ballad by the same name. The exact origin of the ballad is unknown, but its lyrics appear to have much in common with a Scottish ballad The Elfin Knight, dating from the 1670s and even earlier. By the end of the 18th century, Scarborough Fair had acquired dozens of versions, including Whittingham Fair, Cape Ann, etc.

Scarborough Fair began to be recorded in the mid-1950s, although the song became world famous after it was performed by Simon & Garfunkel in 1966, the lyrics of which were combined with their other song The Side of a Hill, forming Scarborough Fair/Canticle. Little Hope features a version performed by an American rock singer LP (Laura Pergolizzi) in the folk genre, although they have no official record of Scarborough Fair, performing it live instead.

This soulful, old-fashioned song follows a conversation between a man and a listener. The man asks the listener, who goes to Scarborough Fair, to find his lover from the past there and remind her of him.

Lyrics[]

Are you going to Scarborough Fair
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine

On the side of a hill in the deep forest green
Trace of sparrow on snow-crested brown
Blankets and bedclothes the child of the mountain
Sleeps unaware of the clarion call

Are you going to Scarborough Fair
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine
She once was a true love of mine

Trivia[]

  • Scarborough Fair does not appear in the game, instead being featured in Little Hope's announcement trailer.
  • Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme are some of the popular herbs used in witchcraft, fitting the game theme.
  • It is believed that the dead are able to return to the living world and various folklore festivals, like Samhain, are held to honor their memory. In the game, this is reflected in how upon returning to Little Hope, Anthony's trauma resurfaces, allowing his dead relatives to return to the living world through reincarnation.
