Open Deck is the first chapter of Act 3 in Man of Medan and the twentieth overall.
The player controls Fliss and Julia/Conrad (Theatrical Cut) and Alex/Brad/Conrad (Curator's Cut) as the group discusses about the events on the ship and the visions they saw.
Weather Deck, 3:32 A.M.[]
As the surviving protagonists hide in the control room, Julia (if alive) nervously asks what is happening on the ship and says she feels some kind of evil. Alex (if alive) offers to calm down and be relatively sane about this, after which the survivors share their adventures and visions.
- If Fliss stabbed Brad and is still alive, Alex (if alive) asks her if she has seen Brad. The Theatrical Cut player briefly controls Fliss where she can describe the ceremony she saw or say she doesn't know where Brad is. Even if Alex is dead, this dialogue will still happen. This is an error.
- If Brad killed Fliss, is still alive, and Julia is still alive, she asks him what he saw. Even if Alex is alive, the Curator's Cut player briefly controls Brad where he can describe the incident or deny seeing anyone.
- If both Fliss and Brad are alive, they reveal that they saw the revived corpses of soldiers.
- If either Fliss/Brad hallucinated in Ritual, the non-hallucinating character scolds them for nearly killing them, though the other is at a loss.
- If Conrad is on the ship and is still alive, he says that he saw a sailor girl, who was "like dinosaur old" and it pursued him.
- If Julia is still alive, she says that she saw another Alex and his face was horrifying. If Alex is still alive, he may answer that he would never hurt her or say that she just imagined it.
If Conrad is on the ship and still alive, he says to take a timeout as the ship is "too fucked up to just be fucked up" and offers to tell them everything they know and can all agree on. The controlled protagonists can then ask questions or make statements and depending on who survived and which secrets were found, the answers can be different:
- Is this a ghost ship? - the protagonists say that they are not the first to see something creepy and that the guards looked very scared.
- If Julia is still alive and found certain secrets, she says that the guards were scared of ghosts on the ship.
- Where is the gold? - the protagonists assume (if Fliss is dead or few secrets were found) that there is no gold at all.
- If Fliss is still alive and found certain secrets, she says that Manchurian Gold is actually a chemical that has spread throughout Cargo Hold 2 which causes heart palpitations.
- What happened to the crew? - the protagonists say that perhaps no one could escape and everyone were scared to death.
- What happened on this ship? - the protagonists say (if certain secrets were found) that the ship sailed in 1947 and was caught in a storm.
- If the protagonists found certain secrets, they say that the ship was bound for San Francisco, but hailed from a water purification plant in China, where they picked up the Manchurian Gold.
- This place is weird. - the protagonists discuss how the ship makes them feel.
After four dialogue choices (or if the player chooses "say nothing" at any point), a protagonist says they are wasting their time and another protagonist says it's time for them to get off the ship, only to be reminded that they must first find the distributor cap to start the Duke. The protagonist then has an idea and suggests to use the ship's radio to call for help.
Trivia[]
- Despite Fliss possibly being controlled at the beginning in Theatrical Cut, the text in the bottom left indicates that the player is controlling Julia/Conrad throughout the entire chapter. This is an error, as is the fact that the dialogue with Fliss still happens if Alex is dead as well, which makes it seem like Fliss is speaking to no one.
- This also applies to Brad in Curator's Cut, but only if he is not going to be controlled throughout the chapter.
- This is the only chapter in the game to feature dialogue choices that don't influence a protagonist's traits. The choices in question are when the protagonists discuss what they know about the ship for a fact.
