This article is about The Dark Pictures Anthology's first installment, Man of Medan .

Olson is the fifth chapter of Act 3 in Man of Medan and the twenty-fourth overall.

The player controls Conrad/Brad/Julia/Fliss/Alex (Theatrical Cut) and Julia/Fliss/Brad/Alex (Curator's Cut) as the former goes down the hole to find the others while the latter pursues Olson. This chapter can be replaced by Matters of the Heart.

4:34 A.M.[]

Radio Room[]

The protagonists in the radio room are bored, waiting for the others, when they hear gunshots from the lower decks. They approach the hole and call out to the absent protagonists, but not hearing a reply, one of them decides to go downstairs to find the others and the generator/distributor cap.

  • If there is more than one protagonist in the radio room, the descending protagonist will discuss the situation with the others and tell them to stay in the room.

Jumping down into the lower deck, the protagonist goes through many corridors before ending up in a room with bunks, where they can find a secret and a picture. Opening the door to exit the room, the protagonist will be frightened by a hanged hallucination, but as they calm down, it turns out to be a regular corpse. Upon exiting the corridor, the protagonist finds themselves on the top floor of Cargo Hold 2, from where they jump down to the lower floor.

  • If the protagonist is Fliss/Brad, they'll notice they've been here before.
  • If Fliss/Brad died in Ritual, the protagonist will be shocked to see their body. If said protagonist is Brad/Fliss, they will be horrified to realize who they attacked while hallucinating.

As they approach the hold with Manchurian Gold, the protagonist hears Olson muttering and as they get closer, they are startled to see him jump out from behind the crates and swinging a sledgehammer. The protagonist tries to calm Olson down, but he swings at them.

  • If the protagonist attacks Olson, they will charge him but be thrown back. Olson will then turn to see water pouring out of the bulkhead door.
  • If the protagonist backs off or does nothing, Olson will attempt to open the last bulkhead door, but not after a futile attempt. He breaks it with his sledgehammer, which causes water from the flooded part of the hold to enter Cargo Hold 2.
  • In Shared Story, if the Curator's Cut player completes their segment early, the Theatrical Cut protagonist will automatically head to Cargo Hold 2 without being able to explore the bunk room and during the confrontation with Olson, the bulkhead door will open from the other side.

Cargo Hold 3[]

The characters who survived the confrontation with Junior in the previous chapter will notice Olson on the top floor and follow him. After passing through the hold, they find no way upstairs, but instead notice a vent in the wall. The vent leads the group to a flooded cargo hold. One of the protagonists looks through the hole in the wall and notices the door to Cargo Hold 2 underwater. The said protagonist then decides to dive for the door while the other protagonist and Junior wait for their signal.

While underwater, the diving protagonist will periodically surface for air unless they have a rebreather. Along the way the protagonist will be startled by a hallucination of the radio operator's corpse, as well as find a sign about the bulkhead doors. Swimming up to the door, the protagonist will try to open the bulkhead, but in vain. They then notice a piece of debris and must use it to break the bulkhead. By doing so, they break the partition wall and open the door, which causes the protagonist to be washed away in Cargo Hold 2.

  • In Shared Story, if the Theatrical Cut player completes their segment earlier, the Curator's Cut protagonist will automatically be washed away in Cargo Hold 2.
  • In Curator's Cut, waiting in the water will cause Olson to open the door.

Whether Olson or the diving protagonist opened the bulkhead door first determines the variant of the next chapter.

Trivia[]

  • This chapter, along with Flooded, will only happen if Alex is dead, went to search for the generator, or is alone in the radio room. Otherwise, Matters of the Heart will happen instead.
