LOCAL MINISTER ARRESTED

A minister in the Diocese of Pleasant River has been arrested after parents complained about his behavior. The arrest comes after recent revelations that the minister conducted an alleged 'satanic mass'.

An eyewitness said that the minister, of St. David's Church in Little Hope, did not resist as he was escorted from his home. Captain Daniel Maguire confirmed that Rev. Leonard Carson (42) was being held in custody at the Little Hope Police Department, awaiting charges.

A spokesman from St. David's Church commented, "I've never seen the Minister do anything untoward. His interest in witchcraft was purely academic, and he would often warn parents of the spiritual dangers of the occult."

Another parishioner, who did not wish to be named, claimed that the Minister was innocent of wrongdoing. "That child is known as an attention seeker and I'm certain she has made up the story." Other members of the congregation agreed. "Reverend Carson was a good man, a godly man," said one mother of three. "I can't believe he'd do anything like this. He's been good to our family. These accusations are lies."

The District Attorney's office did not respond to calls. When contacted, the office of the Diocese of Pleasant River Stated [sic] that the bishop had declined to comment, but that a deacon...

EXPLORING THE URGE TO REACH BEYOND

By Antonia Malkin, Science Correspondent

Everyone knows Apollo 11. The mission to the Moon. Humanity's first steps on a world other than our own. But what about Apollo 10, the mission before? Well, while this early pioneering endeavor has been overshadowed by its higher-achieving cousins, one local historian is making sure it's not forgotten by documenting it in his new book "The Forgotten Apollo - the pre-history of America's lunar legacy"

Alan Childs, a resident of Nantucket and the author of several books on America's great scientific advances, publishes his new tome next week. In it, he details the entire mission from concept through to landing - back on Earth - and so it becomes an important historical document. But it also has drama, including one section in which Childs reveals that there were genuine concerns among the higher echelons of NASA that the Apollo 10 crew could attempt the first Moon landing ahead of schedule and steal the thunder from the later mission.

"It was a shakedown," Childs tells us, "intended to do everything Apollo 11 would, except the actual landing. But while the Apollo 10 astronauts were strict by-the-book operators, whose parabolic arcs were as millimeter-perfect as their haircuts, they were also highly adaptive, able to adjust to any situation. And they were real driven, high achievers - not used to anything but giving their all. A lot of people thought 'Don't give these guys an opportunity to land, because they might!'"

To defuse this risk, the astronauts' craft was deliberately fueled with only half what would be required for a landing. Says Childs, "Had they literally tried to land on the Moon, they couldn't have gotten off."

Technology is getting more advanced all the time. Training is growing more sophisticated. Yet, human nature being what it is, measures like this will be needed for a long time still, to counter the urge in all of us to reach beyond.

The Forgotten Apollo is well-researched, nicely written and will appeal to anyone with an interest in the space race. Available in all good bookstores from Friday.
