TRAGIC FIRE CAUSED BY CHILD'S TOY

THE cause of an [sic] horrific fire at a Little Hope family residence at the weekend may have been a child's toy. Lieutenant David Farr of the Little Hope Volunteer Fire Department told the [sic] Herald that the gas range in the kitchen had been left on and a child's doll set down near it. He believes the doll caught fire and fell off the range, setting the kitchen ablaze. The fire resulted in five deaths amongst the Clarke family. One survivor, Anthony Clarke (18), has been questioned by police after being arrested on suspicion of causing the fire. However, the fire investigation is now thought to exonerate the young man, who will be released today.

The family's minister, Reverend Leonard Carson of St. David's Episcopal Church said the fire was a tragedy. "It's terrible for a family to be decimated. They'd been going through a difficult time recently, as many families do. But they were a good, hard-working and loving family and I was helping them through their troubles. It's a tragedy that it should end like this." No date for the funeral has yet been arranged. Both the Fire Department and the Mayor's Office praised the swift action of police officers who arrived first on the scene and were able to prevent the blaze from claiming its sixth victim. "Officer Reynolds and Hoffmans' quick thinking prevented another death," said the Mayor, who recommended the men for a commendation.

LOCAL STAR TO MAKE SPLASH AT WINTER OLYMPICS

Schenk Aims for Gold at the Sapporo Games

WITH just days to the opening ceremony, Northbridge resident Marie Schenk (18) is aiming for a speed skating gold in the XI Olympic Winter Games in Japan. "I'm so excited," said the Northbridge High Valedictorian. "This is the culmination of years of effort. The USA are going to Japan with one of the strongest teams we've ever fielded, and we're hoping to return with a fistful of medals." Schenk has been tipped for the national Olympic team ever since she first won bronze aged 15 at the World Sprint Championships, and will be competing in the 500 meter and 1,000 meter events.

"I think the timing's just right," the perky blond skater said, "the games have come round at a time when I'm at my peak, so I hope I can make a great showing for my country." After scoring personal bests in the regional championships, Marie has bounced back from injuries sustained at last year's national finals. "The doctors say I'm fully healed and I feel strong and back to my best again."

Marie will be flying out with the rest of the team Tuesday, which will give her just over a week to acclimate and adjust to the time difference. "I'm so looking forward to the opening ceremony," she said. "To be wearing the uniform of my country, and parade in front of a world audience, carrying the pride of my home town and family with me. It'll be far out!" She is also looking forward to seeing Japan. "This will be only my second time out of the country and my first in Japan. I've heard so much about the country, it looks so pretty and I'm told the people are very polite and nice."

The people of Northbridge, and Mayoral representatives of towns across the ... (unreadable) ... will give Marie a ... (unreadable) ... on Sunday at a ... (unreadable) ... honor at Northbridge Town Hall. People from all over will be attending to wish the young Olympian well and her continued success in the February games.

Trivia[]

  • There are two grammar mistakes in the first article, with "an" being used instead of "a" and "The" in "the Herald" (the name of the newspaper) not being capitalized. There are also two mistakes in the second update, with "with" instead of "was" and "wrongdoing" being two words.
  • The mention of Force Recon Marines might be a reference to some of the characters in House of Ashes.
