Joseph Morello is a supporting character in The Dark Pictures Anthology's fourth installment, The Devil in Me. He is a true crime author and he and his family were guests at the hotel prior to the protagonists. He was voiced and motion captured by Abdul Salis and modelled on Tom Weston.

Appearance[]

Morello appears as a middle aged bald man with a light brown complexion. He has a black ring beard and wears a long, blue coat.

Personality[]

While posing as Du'Met, Morello comes across as shifty and frenetic, operating with a sense of urgency. He hurriedly attempts to get the Lonnit Entertainment crew to the hotel, and will express annoyance when Jamie and Kate fall behind.

From secrets found in the game, Morello appeared to be close to his wife and children, even agreeing to participate in Du'Met's plans to ensure his youngest daughter's survival. In the Ultimatum endings, Morello expresses remorse for his role in misleading the crew, but states that he had no choice in the matter, as it was the only way to get Bethany to safety.

Biography[]

Joseph Morello was a notable true crime author. In 2002, he published his first book The Mind of a Killer. He also wrote the book Was he the Devil? about H.H. Holmes, as well as began working on a book about 'The Beast of Arkansas', Manny Sherman. At some point prior to 2021, Joseph married a woman named Michelle, with whom he had two daughters; Natalie and Bethany.

In October of 2022, Morello began a correspondence with Granthem Du'Met, the owner of a replica of Holmes' World's Fair Hotel on a private island. Offering Morello an invitation to see the hotel before its opening, Du'Met also encouraged him to bring along his wife and daughters, as well as his brother Francis and the family dog, Connie.

Shortly after arriving to the island however, Du'Met attacked the family. He successfully killed Natalie, Michelle, and Francis, before taking Bethany captive. Du'Met then gave Morello the task of posing as him to lure the Lonnit Entertainment crew to the island, saying that if he did so, he and Bethany would be allowed to leave the island alive.

Main Story[]

Act 1[]

Morello, under the name "Du'Met", calls the Lonnit Entertainment crew to lure them onto a remote island, telling them that a replica of H.H. Holmes' "Murder Castle" is on there, they accept and he brings in a limo for them. As the crew converse in the limo, Morello's voice is played on a tape recorder to inform the crew that their phones aren't allowed to be used when they arrive on the island, he makes them give up their phones to which they do.

Morello arrives on the shoreline as the crew wait for him, Charlie introduces the crew members and begins to ask him questions, Morello asks Charlie to wait as he'll explain everything later. They all arrive on the island and Morello is questioned by Erin if it's dangerous here, after she observes the dangerous security measures surrounding the island. He reassures her but is further questioned by Jamie, he reassures the crew that it's for their safety and they are far from help if they get hurt.

The crew begins to prep for a shoot while Morello informs them to not get him on camera, he is reassured by Charlie. Mid shoot, Morello interrupts them to usher them towards the hotel, as they move forward, Kate gets a injured ankle which causes them to worry, Charlie asks if there are medical supplies at the hotel to which Morello confirms and they leave Jamie with Kate to get them. Morello is later reunited with Kate and Jamie when the former informs him that her ankle has healed, he scolds them but moves on.

Morello arrives at the entrance of the hotel where he asks Charlie where the others are, he is reassured and they all get back together. The crew are fascinated by the hotel and they make their way inside, Morello checks them in then tells them that they'll begin talking during dinner. Morello is later seen hugging a young girl in one of the hotel rooms. He is seen again after Jamie looks out of a window in her room, Jamie watches as he leaves the island with the young girl.

Act 3[]

If there is at least one survivor besides Kate and Mark or the two are the only survivors but weren't caught by Du'Met, Morello and the girl will be found dead by a state officer on the dock, after which the remaining crew members also find him there. Morello and the girl were killed by Du'Met after they tried to leave the island on the ferry.

If Mark and Kate are captured and are the only survivors, Du'Met plays a recording of Morello confessing that he led them to believe he was Du'Met and that the actual Du'Met wants them to make a call to the next victim, while apologizing for dooming them. He tells them that he had to do it or Du'Met would've killed his daughter (which was the young girl).
