Mark

Sub-Pages

We play his games, we'll lose. We need to outthink him.

Mark Nestor is one of the five main protagonists and a playable character in The Dark Pictures Anthology's fourth installment, The Devil in Me. He is the cameraman for the documentary film show Architects of Murder. He was voiced and motion captured by Fehinti Balogun and was modelled on Michael Addo.

Appearance[]

Mark is an African-American man with dark skin. He has brown eyes, short curly black hair in a Hi-top fade and a short black beard trimmed at the temples.

According to Du'Met's medical details catalogue, he stands at 5'10" (178cm) and weighs 200lbs (91Kg).

Mark wears a white hoodie with a white t-shirt underneath, black pants and white boots. Of accessories, he wears only a thin gold chain around his neck. As a cameraman, Mark always carries a camera and a tripod with him on a black strap. Outside, he completes his image with a red plaid overcoat with black lines. In the interview, Mark wears a black two-button polo shirt with open buttons and an open collar.

Upon arriving at the hotel, Mark takes off the overcoat, but puts it back on when he tries to leave the island. He may be without the overcoat again if he is incapacitated by Du'Met. After falling into a trap but successfully avoiding it, Mark will be noticeably dirtier, although the dirt will wash off when he jumps into water in the finale.

Personality[]

Relaxed, easy going and pretty happy at Lonnit Entertainment. But he lacks ambition and prefers to let others take the lead. He sees the best in people and wants an easy life without taking too much responsibility.

Mark comes across as very friendly, having a good relationship with the entire crew, even Charlie. Although he works as a cameraman, he loves photography and dreams to make his name as a photographer.

Although Mark is generally good, he is very indecisive and lacks ambition, preferring to let someone else make the decision. Thus, the reason Mark turned down his friend Murray's offer to be his partner in the studio was because he thought Kate wouldn't approve. He is also hesitant to tell the crew that it was he who broke up with Kate and not she with him, making her look in a bad light.

Despite his indecision, Mark is brave and not afraid to stand up to danger when those around him are in peril. This is evident in the finale, where he always tries to fight Du'Met on the speedboat.

Biography[]

Mark was born on June 29, 1992, at some point in his life, he joined Lonnit Entertainment to be their cameraman for their show called, "The Architects of Murder". He started a relationship with their TV Host, Kate Wilder, but decided to break up with her at some point, despite still having feelings for her.

On October 26, 2022, Mark was taken on a trip by Charlie to visit and document a replica of H.H. Holmes' "Murder Castle", in order to film their final episode for season one of "The Architects of Murder". He arrived on a remote island in Lake Michigan and was checked into the hotel. But when walls began to move and voices began wailing within them, he realized he had stepped into a death trap. His fate would then be decided by the player, in which he would successfully check out of the hotel, or become one of the killer's many victims.

Main Story[]

Act 1[]

Mark introduces himself in a raw season 2 footage of Charlie's show, "The Architects of Murder". He informs the camera about his time studying at UCLA, saying it was fun but he'd rather get back into serious photography. Mark watches the final episode of season one of Charlie's show, he, along with her other crew members silently agree that it wasn't good. A phone call interrupts Jamie's opinion on the episode and Charlie answers it. He accepts an invitation to document a replica of H.H. Holmes' "Murder Castle" by a Mr. Du'Met, the crew pack and get ready to go to the agreed location. A limo arrives and Mark gets in the vehicle, he expresses excitement about the trip. During the ride, he listens in as the others complain on how this trip is similar to the one they had in Topeka. Du'Met asks them to give up their phones as to not allow them from leaking his personal info, Mark is concerned but gives up his phone as do the others.

They arrive at the shoreline of Lake Michigan where they wait for the ferry, Charlie sees a lighthouse and asks Mark to come with him to get some shots. Mark reluctantly agrees to come with Charlie. After getting their shots, they go back down to board the ferry. The pair meet with the crew as the ferry arrives, getting greeted by Du'Met. They get on the ferry and Mark smiles as they arrive onto the island's shore. As soon as they arrive, the crew begins to shoot their intro and is abruptly stopped by Du'Met, who ushers them to get to the hotel. As the crew continue on their path, Kate seemingly injures her ankle which causes Erin to worry, Charlie informs Jamie to stay behind with Kate which makes Erin confused. Mark tells Erin about their plan and they leave with Du'Met. They later reunite with Kate and Jamie. As they walk further up the hill, they come across a bridge, where Mark is antagonized by Jamie about his fear of heights. Kate can antagonize him as well or help him get over his fear. Mark arrives at the hotel and is amazed to find it in such good condition, he then checks in. However, he notices that some of their bags has not yet arrived to the hotel, informing Du'Met. He is assured that the bags will arrive later and goes to find his room.

After finding his designated room, Mark starts to prepare and clean his equipment. Kate then enters his room to discuss shooting an intro segment, he listens as she complains about Charlie. Kate is irritated by Charlie due to his constant rewriting of her own ideas in their script, as she continues, she notices Mark's contemplation and he is confronted. She brings up a past job offer which Mark jokes or lies about. They avoid the question further as they talk about Kate's looks and what they want the shoot to look like. Mark can bring up their breakup, which frustrates Kate. Afterward, they agree that the balcony would have good lighting and head there. They talk about their past therapy sessions, Du'Met's behavior, and look at the hotel's tarnished state. Upon reaching the balcony, Mark and Kate get startled by a mannequin lookalike of Holmes. Below them, they hear Erin calling to Charlie that dinner is starting, which annoys Kate. The duo then gossip about Charlie which Mark can either agree to or defend which upsets her. Charlie overhears and can act calmly or angrily, Mark and Kate discuss Charlie's reaction then heads to dinner.

The scene at the dinner table is tense when they arrive, due to this, Mark is immediately asked by Kate to pour some wine. As the group discusses the notable absence of Du'Met, Jamie enters the room and informs the crew that he won't be coming, describing him leaving the island as the rest are shocked. Kate is worried and annoyed at Charlie, believing it to be another Topeka incident. Jamie jokes about Du'Met being a killer, which annoys Kate who in turn brings up her concerns about the footage they haven't recorded yet in their time at the hotel in a sarcastic manner. Charlie then give a toast to the crew, if he is supportive, Mark is surprised. If Charlie is hostile, Mark retorts back at him where Charlie can apologize or continue to antagonize him. They then discuss their plans for filming scenes in the hotel lobby, and the crew disperse.

Mark and Kate are in the second floor corridors when they hear Erin scream, and run to help her, finding Charlie and Jamie on the way. They are unable to get the door open and try to calm Erin down through it, as Kate and Jamie find something to break the door, Mark stays to try to get the door open. Kate can find a candlestick in one of the hallways and uses it to break open the door and the crew go into the room to help Erin. If Erin is alive, they comfort her and help her to her feet. Mark holds on to Erin as she says H.H. Holmes attacked her, but the others observe that the mannequin is the only other thing in the room. If she is dead, there will be only an empty room with the mannequin. Mark will then express his confusion on Erin's whereabouts.

Act 2[]

If Erin survived the previous chapter, the crew is gathered in her room. Charlie says they all need to take a deep breath, but Kate says that the trip has been weird every step of the way and that everything about this is off. Jamie reluctantly agrees with Kate, saying somebody tried to attack Erin. If Erin died in the previous chapter, the crew enters her room to find it empty. Jamie and Kate are frightened something bad happened to Erin, while Charlie dismisses their concerns. When Charlie continues to disagree, Kate says Charlie just doesn't want to let the shoot go, and that they need to find Erin and get off the island. Mark hesitantly agrees with Charlie, which aggravates Kate, causing an argument. Mark continues to say that what Erin saw was only a dummy, claiming that she's just confused. Eventually, Mark is persuaded by Kate's words, and the two leave to get their things so that they can escape the island.

In Kate's room, Mark interrupts her as she holds her amethyst crystal, causing her to point it at him on reflex. Mark makes fun of her and Kate can agree or scold him. He apologizes for taunting her, proceeding to explain the true reason on why he broke up with her. After hearing this, Mark can kiss Kate and get back together or stay apart. Together, they decide to go back to Erin and leave. As they wander the halls, Kate discovers a newspaper about her best friend who was murdered. Explaining the story to Mark, she blames herself for her death as she overslept, leaving her friend alone. The duo suddenly hear a noise, turning the corner, they find that the walls are beginning to move. On the other side, Charlie and Jamie try to rush in before it separates them. Mark and Kate try to prevent the wall from closing, if they succeed, they can be warned by Charlie to escape the hotel. Either way, the wall fully shuts.

Heading downstairs, the duo try to locate Charlie and Jamie. However, they begin hearing noises in the restaurant, finding multiple identical mannequins that look like the crew. Looking around the room, they meet back with Jamie who explains what transpired before they got separated. However, Jamie's mannequin begins to repeat the word "dead", which causes Kate to tell her to shut it up. Jamie grabs a bottle and strikes the mannequin which causes an eyeball to fall out, causing Mark to react with disgust. The trio try to leave but find that the doors are now locked. They try to open one of them and another door unlocks themselves. They enter a bar and go through a door behind the counter which makes causes them to end up in a wine cellar. Charlie then appears on a TV screen, they try to exit through a door but find it locked. A code is needed to open it, a timer starts to tick down and the trio figure out that the code is located on the wine bottles, they open the door and discover on a monitor that Charlie is now inside a room filled with gas.

A mannequin lights a lighter which causes the room to go up in-flames, Mark finds and pulls down a lever with a fire symbol on it, Kate and Jamie finds that the fire is now dying down. But in doing so, fire begins to near towards Mark in the room, Jamie tells Mark to keep holding the lever as Charlie is finding a way out. Charlie begins to scream and Kate pulls Mark away as the fire catches up to him, the trio watches in horror as they witness Charlie's supposed death. A wall opens up and the trio continue to move forward, they discover an abandoned spa and Jamie tries to open a door to the lobby, the door fails to open so she tries another way. Mark and Jamie find another door then force it open, they activate a contraption and fall through an open floor. Now separated from Kate, they try to make their way back to her, they discover what happened to the construction workers who were Du'Met's victims. They also find a key to the lobby door before reuniting with Kate.

The trio open the door then make their way up the stairs and wander the corridors, Kate hears something then runs off. Kate finds Erin but is trapped in a section of the vault. Mark and Jamie catch up to them and watch through two windows as air gets sucked out of both sections, horrifying them. Mark tries to open they're doors but with no luck, he spots a regulator switch and quickly deduces that in order to save one, they have to kill the other. Mark is too afraid to choose so Jamie is forced to make the choice as Erin begs for her life.

If Jamie chooses to kill Erin, she suffocates and Mark can watch as she writes in blood Charlie's name. If Jamie chooses to kill Kate, Erin thanks Jamie and escapes out of the vault. Kate begins to suffocate but not before informing Mark about a leak in the window. Mark breaks the window which saves Kate's life. Jamie is concerned for Kate but is slapped by her. Reunited with Erin, they tell her about Charlie's death, she can tell them about his betrayal or is shocked about the news.

The trio open the door then make their way up the stairs and wander the corridors, they hear Erin's voice and follow it while conversing about Du'Met. They find him exiting a room, the trio enter said room to find many surgical equipment and a heart rate monitor. Jamie can find Erin's directional microphone which causes her to worry, she moves a surgical drape and find Erin sitting on a wheel chair. Jamie calls for the others about her discovery.

Jamie turns Erin around and is horrified to find her mutilated, with blood being pumped into her heart, the crew are shocked to see her turned into an animatronic. The heart stops beating and Jamie leaves the room, Kate covers Erin's body with a tarp. They leave the room and go back into the corridors. Mark watches as Jamie gets comforted by Kate, but she shakes her off and tells her to stop acting like she cares now.

The crew all agree to head to the lighthouse in order to signal for help, but before they plan further, Kate hears the walls begin to move. Kate runs off and Erin is close behind her, Mark falls through a trapdoor as Jamie gets blocked off from the others. Mark slides down a vent but his camera gets stuck, causing him to stop. He breaks and falls through the vent, nearly getting trapped in a cage. His camera falls down the vent afterwards which he can catch, if not, it falls into hydrochloric acid. Now in the basement, he explores his new surroundings, finding mannequins, tools, and taking pictures if he still has his camera. At different points in time, Du'Met searches around the area to find Mark, where he will have to hide behind or under various objects. If caught, he is knocked out and tied to a pipe, he will eventually escape and crawls through a vent. Otherwise, he will find the vent on his own then proceeds to crawl through it.

Act 3[]

Reaching the swimming pool, he explores the area and makes his way to a door, having to slide down. If Charlie is alive, Mark finds and ambushes him, where he is grateful to see him alive, Mark will inform Charlie about the others. If Erin died, Mark can tell Charlie about Erin's death and is saddened to hear the news. Mark explains to Charlie about their plan to reach the lighthouse to signal for help, the duo continues onwards into a warehouse. They discover a few monitors and bloody clothing but are soon interrupted by Du'Met's footsteps, the duo hides from him in a freezer. If Charlie fails to hide, he will be gutted and strung up onto a meat hook, otherwise Du'Met will leave. Mark to their horror, discover multiple body bags strung up, Charlie comments on how Du'Met is preserving his kills. They move forward and cross an unsteady beam where Charlie can fall and die, if not, then they both make it to the lighthouse.

They both are startled by Erin but is glad to have found her, she tells the duo that she found a way into the lighthouse and guide them there. If Erin had found a tape that indicates Charlie's involvement in the murders, she will confront him about it. She tries to coerce Mark into tying up Charlie until help gets here. If Mark agrees, Charlie is tied onto a fence and is killed by Du'Met when left behind, otherwise Mark will defend Charlie and he is brought into the lighthouse. The group can discover proof that Charlie was not involved in the murders, to which Erin will apologize to him. Charlie and Erin stay behind as Mark fixes the beacon, reuniting with Kate and Jamie in the process. They hear fighting and discover Mark injured, Du'Met ambushes them but Charlie fights him off with a lamp then the crew runs to the boathouse.

At the boathouse, the crew finds a police officer but he is quickly killed off by Du'Met, destroying his boat as well. They run off and reach a spare boat to which they start, they narrowly avoid Du'Met and speed off. The crew celebrate their escape as Mark looks back at the island. Just then, Du'Met ambushes them and the crew have a final standoff, Mark can die in the process after getting impaled by an axe or anchor. If he survives, Mark jumps off the boat and is safe from harm, Mark will swim towards the mainland.

Mark enters the lighthouse only to be knocked unconscious by Du'Met. He wakes up back in the hotel, trapped inside a metal phonebooth. He sees that Kate is strapped onto a gurney, with tubes going into her nostrils, filled with hydrochloric acid. Du'Met drops some of the acid onto her arm, causing her pain. Mark screams at him to stop. Du'Met plays a video by Joseph Morello informing the two about his actions, calling the crew to come to the island in order to save his daughter.

Morello tells Mark to make a choice, either to call the next victims to the hotel or else both Mark and Kate will die. Kate can either tell Mark to get her out or to not do it. If Mark doesn't make the call, Kate is filled with hydrochloric acid and Mark gets suffocated by gas, dying. Otherwise, Du'Met lets them go and they try to leave on the ferry. As Mark is comforted by Kate, in the distance, Du'Met has a sniper rifle and proceeds to shoot them both in order to continue the cycle.

The End[]

On the mainland, Mark and the others flag down a truck driver on the road, they huddle up together with police vehicles surrounding them.

Charlie[]

Charlie is Mark's boss, and he is Charlie's most loyal crew member. The two have the highest relationship together, and Charlie always depends on Mark to back up his plans when Kate and Jamie disagree. Mark is the least willing to believe Erin when she says Charlie is helping Du'Met, and is the most reluctant to disobey Charlie's orders. Despite this, Mark can side with Kate when she says she plans to move on from Lonnit Entertainment, and he can side with Erin when she makes an argument for why Charlie cannot be trusted.

Erin[]

Mark and Erin are co-workers and do not interact much. Mark is protective of Erin when she is frightened by the blacked out room, and Erin is sympathetic over Mark and Kate's breakup. However, Mark tends to side with Charlie over Erin when it comes to their arguments over leaving the hotel and whether Charlie is working with Du'Met or not. He can side with her and tie Charlie up in Lighthouse.

Jamie[]

Mark and Jamie are co-workers and friends, with Jamie being defensive of Mark because she believes Kate broke up with him and not the other way around. Though she makes fun of his fear of heights, the two stay on good terms throughout the game.

Kate[]

Main article: Kate and Mark

Kate is Mark's ex-girlfriend and co-worker. In the game, the pair are together for a decent amount of time. Kate and Mark's relationship is shown to be strained but can be progressed in the many scenes the two share together. That being said, Kate finds Mark's lack of ambition to be upsetting and does not shy away from calling him out for his indecisiveness. Though their relationship as a couple hangs in the balance, they can still remain on good terms, as seen in the ending if they do not reconcile during the events of the night.
