I met with Lucinda today at her residence in Twilight Prairie as she is unable to attend the hospital. She was accompanied by her son who mostly spoke on her behalf. Lucinda is a 78-year-old woman who was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer in March 1996 (lifelong tobacco smoker).
Symptoms have worsened recently. Constant and severe chest pain, exacerbated by a persistent cough. Also reports extreme fatigue and weakness. Examination confirmed weight loss and muscle deterioration. Chest radiograph from August is consistent with worsening condition. Needs assistance with visiting the bathroom, eating meals and taking medication.

Advancement of cancer means surgery or other therapies are unsuitable. The prognosis is that she will reach the end of life within three to six months. She has been moved to a nursing wing that can provide extra care.
Lucinda understands that she is in end-of-life care and has been making arrangements for tidying up her affairs.
