“ | Think about the killers we've covered, there's always a weakness. | ” |
Katherine Wilder, also known as Kate, is one of the five main protagonists and a playable character in The Dark Pictures Anthology's fourth installment, The Devil in Me. She is an investigative journalist and the host of the documentary film show Architects of Murder. She was voiced and motion captured by Jessie Buckley, who also provided her likeness.
Appearance[]
Kate is a woman with a light complexion and brown eyes. Her hair is red and medium long, with a small bun and a bang on the left side of her face.
According to Du'Met's medical details catalogue she stands at 5'4.5" (164cm) and weighs 119lbs (53Kg).
Kate wears a deep blue V-neck blouse with white buttons, ripped jeans with a belt and white sneakers. She wears silver jewelry, including a star-shaped earrings, a small necklace and two rings. She also paints her nails purple. Outside, Kate wears a denim jacket, gray sunglasses, and a dark green beanie. While filming the show and for the interview, Kate is dressed in a black tuxedo with a shirt, black in the show and white in the interview.
Upon arriving at the hotel, Kate takes off all of her outerwear. She can fall off the roof while escaping from Du'Met, causing her to get dirty, although the dirt will wash off in the rain and after jumping into water in the finale. In the latter case, Kate will get wet.
Personality[]
“ | The show's presenter and the rising star of Lonnit Entertainment. Highly driven and articulate, but lacking in self-confidence. Kate approaches problems rationally but doesn't always think about everyone else. | ” |
Kate makes her debut as a strong character with a serious demeanor, which is apparent in the way she acts around others. She is confident and isn't afraid to speak her mind if she doesn't like something. However, Kate is rarely aggressive and mostly argues when others disagree with her.
As the show's host, Kate is talented in acting, which coupled with her observation skills as an investigative journalist allows her to put together information efficiently and effectively. Her on-screen charm has earned her fame and fan recognition, even getting invited onto a talk show at one point. Being the one who does the talking in front of the camera, Kate worries about how she looks and can come across as vain.
It is later revealed that Kate uses her acting skills to hide her fears. Following the murder of her friend Shelby in college, she developed PTSD and immense guilt from her belief that the incident was her fault. Kate copes with her anxiety by keeping an amethyst crystal in her pocket to calm herself.
Kate's assertive personality and popularity on the show have led to disagreement between her and other members of the crew. She shares a rivalry with Jamie, often fights with Charlie over the script, and has a strained relationship with Mark, who is her ex-boyfriend. Despite this tense atmosphere, Kate works cohesively with her crewmates during filming and worries for them when they are in danger.
Biography[]
In college, Kate was supposed to meet up one night with her friend Shelby, but Kate slept in that day and didn't show up. Shelby waited regardless, and was murdered by a stalker. The experience led to Kate developing PTSD. The incident is reported in a newspaper dated April 5, 2012.
Later in life, Kate became a investigative journalist and joined the Lonnit Entertainment company. She became the TV host on their show called, "The Architects of Murder", and started a career on documenting serial killers. On October 26, 2022, Kate and the rest of the crew embarked to visit and document a replica of H.H. Holmes' "Murder Castle", in order to film their final episode for season one of "The Architects of Murder". They arrived on the island in Lake Michigan and checked into the hotel. Her fate during and after the story is determinant, either dying on the island or surviving the night, possibly having rekindled her relationship with Mark.

Main Story[]
Act 1[]
Kate introduces herself in a raw season 2 footage of Charlie's show, "The Architects of Murder". She informs the camera that she studied criminal psychology and isn't afraid to speak her mind, saying that being honest makes her come off as rude to others. In the assembled footage of the show's season 1 finale, Kate describes H.H. Holmes' crimes and his current status, being deceased, and asks the camera if Holmes was truly possessed by the devil before the episode finally ends. The crew watch the footage, and are displeased with the current state of the project. Jamie tries to comment but is interrupted by a phone call, which Charlie answers. He accepts an invitation to document a replica of H.H. Holmes' "Murder Castle" by a Mr. Du'Met, the crew pack and get ready to go to the agreed location. A limo arrives and Kate tries to put her belongings in the back trunk, but it is stolen by Jamie. They both have a brief back and forth before Kate ceases the argument. They get inside the limo and leave.
Jamie mentions how their trip is similar to their trip to Topeka, which was a disaster, Kate agrees with this and is skeptical about the whole thing. The crew all join in on the conversation but Charlie is quick to reassure them. Du'Met asks them to give up their phones as he values privacy, Charlie once again reassures them and Kate begrudgingly hands in her phone. They arrive at the shoreline of Lake Michigan where they all retrieve their things. Charlie and Mark decide to head along the shoreline to a lighthouse for background footage, which worries Kate. The pair meet back with the crew as the ferry approaches, and Kate asks Charlie on how Du'Met knew about their show, to which he isn't sure. The ferry arrives on shore, where she introduces herself to Du'Met. They get on the ferry and Kate puts on a smile as they arrive onto the island's shore. As soon as they arrive, Kate can joke with Charlie or complain about their hike up the hill to the hotel itself. Erin notices the dangerous security measures surrounding the island, Du'Met tries to reassure her but Jamie remains doubtful.
Charlie instructs the crew to start filming on the ferry slip, and Kate straightens her hair and is teased by Jamie. Kate starts the intro but is interrupted by Du'Met, he urges them to move forward. Before moving on, she notices a groundskeeper on the island. Charlie convinces her to trespass in order to find out what Du'Met's hiding. She fakes an injury and Jamie is forced to join her investigation by Charlie. After the crew leaves and the two are left behind, they begin searching the hotel grounds, they find the groundskeeper doing his daily duties but nothing of suspicion towards Du'Met. The duo reunite with the others before getting scolded by Du'Met. As they walk further up the hill, they come across a bridge, where Jamie antagonizes Mark about his fear of heights. Kate can antagonize him as well or help him get over the fear. The crew arrive at the hotel's entrance and Kate sees a young girl standing in the window. She informs Jamie about what she saw, but Jamie only teases her. The crew enter the hotel and check in.
After finding her designated room, Kate makes her way to Mark to record some footage and discuss her frustrations with Charlie. She is irritated by him due to his constant rewriting of her own ideas in their script, as she continues, she notices Mark's contemplation and confronts him. She brings up a past job offer which Mark jokes or lies about. They avoid the question further as they talk about Kate's looks and how they want the shoot to look like. Mark can bring up their breakup, which frustrates Kate. Afterward, they agree that the balcony would have good lighting and head there. They talk about their past therapy sessions, Du'Met's behavior, and look at the hotel's tarnished state. Upon reaching the balcony, Kate and Mark get startled by a mannequin lookalike of Holmes. Below them they hear Erin calling to Charlie that dinner is starting, which annoys Kate. Kate and Mark then gossip about Charlie which Mark can agree to or defends which upsets Kate. Charlie overhears and can be calm or angry at them, and everyone heads to dinner.
The scene at the dinner table is tense when they arrive and immediately Kate asks Mark to pour some wine. As the group discusses the notable absence of Du'Met, Jamie enters the room and says that he won't be coming, describing him leaving the island as the rest are shocked. Kate is worried and annoyed at Charlie, believing it to be another Topeka incident. Jamie jokes about Du'Met being a killer, which annoys Kate who in turn brings up her concerns about the footage they haven't recorded yet in their time at the hotel in a sarcastic manner. Charlie then give his toast to the crew, if he is supportive, Kate is surprised, and if Charlie is hostile, she retorts back at him. They then discuss their plans for filming scenes in the hotel lobby, and the crew disperse.
Kate and Mark are in the second floor corridors when they hear Erin scream, and run to help her, finding Charlie and Jamie on the way. They are unable to get the door open and try to calm Erin down through it, before Kate and Jamie are sent off by Charlie to find something to break open the door with. Kate can find a candlestick in one of the hallways and uses it to break open the door and the crew go into the room to help Erin. If Erin is alive, they comfort her and help her to her feet. Erin says she was attacked by H.H. Holmes, but the others observe that the mannequin is the only other thing in the room. Kate blames Charlie for overworking Erin and causing her to hallucinate things from the show. If she is dead, there will be only an empty room with the mannequin. Charlie says that she must have gotten lost or wandered into a hidden passageway, to which Kate retorts that it is simply a closet.
Act 2[]
If Erin survived the previous chapter, the crew is gathered in her room. Charlie says they all need to take a deep breath, but Kate says that the trip has been weird every step of the way and that everything about this is off. Jamie reluctantly agrees with Kate, saying somebody tried to attack Erin. If Erin died in the previous chapter, the crew enters her room to find it empty. Jamie and Kate are frightened something bad happened to Erin, while Charlie dismisses their concerns. When Charlie continues to disagree, Kate says Charlie just doesn't want to let the shoot go, and that they need to find Erin and get off the island. Mark is hesitant to abandon the job, which aggravates Kate and she argues until he concedes, and the two leave to get their things so they can leave the island.

Charlie[]
Charlie is Kate's boss. Like most of the crew, Kate shares a choppy relationship with Charlie, often arguing over the show's direction and Charlie's failure to meet the standards of a leader. However, she does appear to show some kind of respect and care for how her boss thinks of her, as she can restrain herself from speaking out against him during the crew's supposed dinner with Du'Met.
Erin[]
Erin is Kate's co-worker. The two seem to share a decent relationship, with Erin telling Jamie how Kate was nice to her. In the game, the pair never get into any fights or arguments with each other, making Erin the only one of the crew that Kate has no underlying issues with. If Erin is killed, Kate will be visibly distraught over it, but quickly moves on.
Jamie[]
Jamie is Kate's co-worker. Since the start of the game, the two often argue and make distasteful remarks about each other. Despite their constant quarreling, the two quickly learn to set aside their petty bickering with the common goal of surviving Du'Met's hotel. As the game progresses, however, a friendship can develop between the two, an example of this being Jamie choosing to sacrifice herself for Kate or the latter telling Jamie that her death is not on her hands in the Glass Trap.
Mark[]
Main article: Kate and Mark
Mark is Kate's ex-boyfriend and co-worker. In the game, the pair are together for a decent amount of time. Kate and Mark's relationship is shown to be strained but can be progressed in the many scenes the two share together. That being said, Kate finds Mark's lack of ambition to be upsetting and does not shy away from calling him out for his indecisiveness. Though their relationship as a couple hangs in the balance, they can still remain on good terms, as seen in the ending if they do not reconcile during the events of the night.
