People who sit behind desks don't tend to catch so many bullets, you know?

Lance Corporal José Gomez[1], also known as Joey, is a supporting character in The Dark Pictures Anthology's third installment, House of Ashes. He is a United States Force Reconnaissance Marine Lance Corporal of Mailman 2-1. He was voiced and motion captured by Sammy Azero and was modelled on Jonathan Burteaux.

Appearance[]

He wears a standard invasion-era marine uniform:

  • Interceptor body armor in tan camouflage - with water, magazine pouches and miscellaneous gear
  • PASGT helmet in three color desert camouflage - with a small light
  • 3-color desert camouflage fatigues
  • Earpiece and radio
  • Tan backpack

In addition, he wears glasses, and a crucifix that Nick later finds.

Personality[]

Joey is a marine who is comfortable working on a support job rather than fighting on the front-lines as he says that "people behind desks" don't tend to catch bullets. He trusts his gut feelings and is immediately worried when briefed about the operation Eric wants to launch. However, he seems to be interested in catching Saddam, as he holds an ace of spades card with his picture on it. He is religious as shown with him wearing a crucifix pendant. Joey is also superstitious about common held beliefs such as never looking behind when disembarking a helicopter.

He shares the same sense of humor as Merwin, hyping him up and responding to his jokes with more banter. He is not as outwardly disrespectful to women as Merwin is, however. Joey also has a habit of whistling, which carries through even when he becomes a vampire.

House of Ashes[]

Main Story[]

Act 1[]

Joey is first seen sitting behind on his desk in the briefing room, whom he meets Eric, Jason, and Clarice. Joey is forced to give Eric full site access, much to his dismay. He participates in the briefing and later is seen holding a card depicting Saddam.

In the helicopter, Joey switches "mum" jokes with Merwin, who is then silenced by Rachel. Later, both him and Clarice converse about superstitions. When landing near the shepherds' farm, Merwin distracts Joey to look behind, much to his anger. After infiltrating the farm, Joey stands outside to guard the farm. He then notices that one of their helicopters got shot down, and is the first to be shot by the Iraqi forces. Jason, Nick, and Merwin attempt to save him, to which they can fail or succeed to do so, only for Joey to die regardless.

Act 2[]

Joey is briefly mentioned by Jason, who attempts to radio contact him but can learn by Nick that he didn't make it. When Jason and Nick explore one of the temple's hallways, they hear Joey's scream, much to Nick's disbelief. They then venture out to look for Joey.

In the caverns, they find Joey's helmet and med kit. They soon see his shadow, but are immediately ambushed by Dar. Joey can possibly be mentioned by Jason when reuniting with Nick. Back at the temple, Joey will approach a resting Merwin if he's alive, but do nothing. He walks past Eric when the latter is busy in the tent. He as a vampire starts to attack Jason on a crane above the chasm. Regardless of what they do, Joey will always fall into the chasm. If Clarice didn't reach the temple and Rachel told the truth or Jason shot Clarice, Joey would briefly be mentioned by Jason about his fate.

Relationships[]

Merwin[]

Merwin, being a fellow marine, shares the same sense of humor as Joey and they are seen to have a very brotherly, rough-and-tumble relationship, cracking jokes at each other and not getting offended, but instead hyping each other up. If Merwin stays alive, Joey will approach him as a vampire but then walk away, leaving it unclear if Merwin is infected.

Trivia[]

Pictures[]

  • Joey as a vampire appears in 1 picture: Staked.

Facts[]

  • Joey mistakenly refers to Saddam Hussein as "Chemical Ali." It was actually the nickname of Ali Hassan al-Majid, a relative and the Defense Minister of Saddam Hussein. He notably used chemical weapons on Kurds rebel groups and has been nicknamed since by Iraqis.
  • Joey had a pet horse named "Lucky" who ironically ran away.

Quotes[]

Jason: Damn, Joey. They got you sitting behing a desk? You want me to make a call?
Joey: Nah, I'm all good. People who sit behind desks don't tend to catch so many bullets, you know?
So this must be the one and only satellite guy?

Eric: Lieutenant Colonel Eric King. And if I'm not mistaken, Lance Corporal, that makes me your commanding officer.
Joey: He's shitting me right? Ah crap! He's not shitting me...
A lot of shit can go down in 24 hours.

Joey: I don't know, man. It don't feel right. I'm getting this tingle down the back of my neck.
Merwin: Aw, sweetie, look. A good rub down will sort that right out, huh?
Joey: I'm serious! I've got a real bad feeling about this.
Eric: You're feeling lucky, Lance Corporal?
Joey: Well, my parents owned a horse named Lucky. He ran away.
Eric: Bet the farm on this. I have a good feeling we're gonna clear up.
Joey: I wish I shared your optimism, Colonel.
Joey: I swear Merwin's brought some bad juju down on us.
Jason: I don't believe in curses, the tooth fairy or Santa Claus.
Joey: The tooth fairy, yeah, but Santa? Say it ain't so! You truly fucked up Christmas, man.
Liar.

If I were you... I wouldn't get too comfortable sitting behind that desk.

Salim: They have a lookout in the yard.
Dar: Then we'll hit him first.
Jason: Joey, report in! Over.
Nick: Joey's dead.
Jason: The fuck you're talking about?
Nick: The Iraqis tore right through him. He died in my fucking arms.
Jason: Aw, no. Not Joey.
