“ | As for Jason and Salim - sworn enemies who cannot seem to bury the hatchet - unless that hatchet is buried in the back. | ” |
Jason and Salim is a conflict, forced alliance, and possible friendship in The Dark Pictures Anthology's third installment, House of Ashes.
Overview[]
Jason and Salim serve as soldiers for the United States and Iraq respectively, countries at war with each other, making them sworn enemies. Besides being on opposite sides of the war, their personalities are also diametrically opposed, with the impulsive Jason who has no tolerance for his country's enemies and the reasonable Salim who is willing to cooperate with the enemy for a common goal, making their interaction very difficult.
The first few encounters between the guys prove unsuccessful, as Jason and Salim clash as enemies. However, with the emergence of the vampires, the two are forced to form an alliance to survive against a common enemy. Salim makes several attempts to befriend Jason to which the American can continue to distrust him or open up, causing the guys to bond. In the end, when Salim is ambushed by vampires and left behind, Jason can leave him to die, seeing him as an enemy Iraqi (though he will regret it later) or come back for him, seeing Salim as his friend and brother in arms.
House of Ashes[]
The Raid[]
Jason and Salim meet for the first time in the target LZ during a firefight taking place. After whether Jason killed the shepherd or not, Salim will appear behind him with his rifle raised. Salim will lower his weapon, saying the line "no more killing" or shoot Jason in the shoulder. Further interactions don't seem to exist as an earthquake is happening at the moment, plunging both guys into different points of the caverns.
The Truce[]
Jason and Salim can meet again in the sand caverns when Jason (alone or with Eric) searches for Nick, who got separated from the group after a gunfight with Dar. Once they find him, the Americans may clash with Salim (Nick and Salim are compromised, Salim failed to hide, or Nick gave him away), which will end with either Salim being taken prisoner or escaping, injuring Jason in the process.
- Salim shoots the Americans, killing Eric and/or wounding Jason in the process. (Theatrical Cut)
- Salim surrenders to the Americans. (Theatrical Cut)
Bloodbath[]
If Eric was dead before The Truce and Salim surrendered peacefully, then Salim would be shown tied up by Jason and Nick. Otherwise, this scene does not take place. After Jason and Nick fortified a part of the temple, they will return to Salim and Salim will show his concerns about him being tied up, as this makes him an easy target for the creatures. Jason can then reassure Salim that he is safe or aggressively reaffirm that they are enemies. Nonetheless, Jason and Nick leave him to further fortify another part of the temple.
- Jason reassured Salim that he is safe.
- Jason acted hostile towards Salim.
The Horror[]
Jason along with the rest of the Americans descend deeper into the catacombs where they encounter the Iraqis. They will have a standoff but the Iraqis are quickly outnumbered by the Americans. If Jason previously shot the shepherd, then Salim will add on how at least this time they wouldn't be shot in the back. Eric (or Nick) decide whether or not they would let Salim keep his gun. They eventually work together to get a door open when they hear the creatures approach.
- If Eric was killed by Salim, Jason will be aggressive towards him and remarks on how he didn't forget what Salim did.
Further interactions don't seem to exist as an ensuing battle from the creatures makes them unable to further communicate.
- Salim told the Americans that they needed to work together. (Curator's Cut)
- Salim told the Americans that he doesn't trust any one of them. (Curator's Cut)
