Island is the fifth chapter of Act 1 in The Devil in Me and the sixth overall.
The player controls Kate (Theatrical Cut) and Jamie (Curator's Cut) as they sneak off from the group to further explore the island.
Island Shoreline, 6:21 P.M.[]
As the ferry approaches the shoreline, a man in a yellow raincoat observes the group. The ferry boards the dock, with the ferryman exiting and asking everyone to stick together as they head up to the hotel. Erin asks if it's dangerous, and when the man insists that it's safe, Jamie says he doesn't seem sure. Mark notes the security as he observes the front gate, and the man tells the crew not to worry about their bags as he'll make sure they are brought. Kate can say she isn't dressed for a hike or playfully tell Charlie not to cough up a lung. Mark questions what Du'Met is afraid will get in, and Jamie can either suggest he's trying not to let something out or say that a private island should be security enough.
Charlie tells Mark to get his camera for a quick intro, with Kate talking to the camera and some shots leading up to the house. The ferryman says he cannot be recorded, as he is a very private person, and Charlie reassures him. Jamie, Erin, and Mark say they are ready, and Charlie calls for the take to start. Kate tells the camera that she has just arrived on the island, which claims to have genuine artifacts from Holmes. Charlie tells her to walk toward the house, and as she does so, the ferryman enters the shot and tells them that's enough. Kate appears annoyed but Charlie agrees, quietly asking Mark to steal some more shots along the way. As they follow the ferryman, Kate witnesses the man in the raincoat pushing an empty luggage cart.
As they walk, Charlie asks Kate to get a look around in secret by doing what she did "with those cops in Glendale." Kate is reluctant at first, but then fakes an ankle injury, confusing everyone else. Charlie tells Jamie to stay with her as the rest of the group continues forward, and Jamie realizes his plan and agrees. Erin asks what is going on and Mark says he'll clue her in later. As the groups separate, Kate tells Jamie that Charlie wants a better lay of the land, and Jamie uses her screwdriver to break through a gate.
The women can explore, finding a secret, an obol, and a sign saying "KEEP OUT." Along the way, they can also view a window showing a railroad system with the rail car at the top. They eventually climb up a slope and reach an area where the duo can see the other group walking past through the fence. Erin asks the ferryman about his family, and he says his wife died. The pair must hide, with Charlie distracting the ferryman to keep him from seeing them if they fail (which decreases Charlie's relationship with whoever failed to hide). Kate and Jamie continue up the island and come across a dilapidated house with its front door locked and a rail car that goes up and down the island. Kate and Jamie can climb through a hole to enter the house through the back entrance, where they can:
- Find a dead squirrel on the porch.
- Find a picture.
- Find a vacation photo of the ferryman with his family.
- View a book on bird spotting in the British Isles.
- Unlock the house's door from the inside.
Kate and Jamie can find two obols in a ditch in front of the rail car and interact with the rail car. Upon interacting with it, Kate and Jamie climb over, where they can find another obol before reaching an open area with a fuse box. They notice that there is no power, and can climb a ladder to reach a higher area where they can find five obols and jump down into a locked area where a lever can be pulled to restore power. After doing so, Jamie must use her multimeter to fix the fuse box, with the player briefly controlling Jamie in the Theatrical Cut. Once the fuse box is fixed, the rail car moves up to reach them, and they can climb over it again to continue forward.
Jamie notices a locked door and questions what is through there before the two hear a sound and notice the man in the raincoat coming toward them. They must hide behind a rock, and if they do so, the man unlocks one of the doors before leaving. Otherwise, he leaves immediately. The two can then explore the area to find a secret and, in the unlocked area, the Chemical Invoice on top of several crates. Eventually, they climb up a ledge and catch up with the group. Kate says her ankle feels better and Jamie says they found a shortcut up the hill. Charlie reminds everyone to stay under Du'Met's eye before pulling Kate aside to ask what she thinks. She describes the island as a "summer camp from Hell."
The group reaches a bridge, and Jamie notices Mark being reluctant to cross. She asks if he's afraid of heights, and when he says he is, she can either tease him by saying they're all going to die or reassure him that Du'Met spends a lot on security. As Jamie goes across, Kate looks over the railing and observes that it is a serious drop before asking Mark if he is okay. She can ask him if he needs a piggy-back ride or say he can do it. If Kate asks him if he needs a piggy-back ride, he tells her not to be rude, and she can either apologize or be impatient with him.
- If Kate reassures him or apologizes, their relationship increases as Kate takes his hand and slowly leads him across the bridge, with him thanking her at the end.
- If Kate is impatient, their relationship decreases as Kate takes his hand and quickly pulls him across the bridge.
- If Kate says nothing, she crosses the bridge without him.
The ferryman asks Charlie where everyone is, and he calls them over. The group approaches the hotel as the man in the raincoat is shown wheeling their luggage past the entrance doors. Charlie says the hotel looks magnificent, and Kate says it might not be a waste of a weekend after all. Kate then notices a girl watching her through a window. Jamie asks her what she is doing, and she says she saw a little girl up there, though the girl is now gone. Jamie can make fun of Kate by suggesting it was her one fan, now lost forever, or sarcastically suggest it is Du'Met's daughter running down for an autograph. Kate is annoyed with Jamie regardless.
Everyone enters the lobby, with the ferryman warning everyone that the things inside are fragile. Mark notices that not all their luggage has been brought, and the man reassures him that the rest is on its way. The crew checks in, with Erin telling Charlie that his cigarettes are in the blue backpack. The ferryman says he will see everyone at eight for dinner. Charlie exclaims to the group that this was a good plan. As the crew goes up the stairs, Jamie notices a counter on the wall, which reads 0178.
In an unknown location, an old woman is shown in a rocking chair as a door nearby creaks open. The man in the raincoat walks in, and the woman berates him, saying he's been out and about all day and she has been worrying. The man ignores her and looks outside a window.
