Erin

I'm totally not the scared lost lamb Charlie makes me out to be.

Erin Keenan is one of the five main protagonists and a playable character in The Dark Pictures Anthology's fourth installment, The Devil in Me. She is the interned sound engineer for the documentary film show Architects of Murder. She was voiced and motion captured by Nikki Patel and was modelled on Rabia Maddah.

Appearance[]

Erin is a young Asian-American woman with brown skin. She has brown eyes with blue eyelashes and plum eyeshadows and short curly black hair.

According to Du'Met's medical details catalogue she stands at 5'4" (163cm) and weighs 115lbs (52Kg).

Erin wears a yellow sweater with rolled up sleeves, a white V-neck blouse underneath, a beige plaid mini-skirt with black lines, black stockings and black shoes. She wears small gold earrings a gold necklace engraved with the letter E. As a sound engineer, Erin always wears black headphones around her neck that she puts on when using her microphone. Until partway through Guests, Erin completes her look with a black leather jacket.

Upon arriving at the hotel, Erin takes of her jacket. As the game progresses, she doesn't receive any significant changes to her appearance, besides getting wet from jumping into water in the finale.

Personality[]

Insecure and sometimes overlooked she has ended up as Charlie's dogsbody.

Erin is sweet, cheerful, and naturally amiable to others. Compared to her more loose crew members, she is rather polite and rarely uses profanity. She stands out for her shyness, often preferring to remain quiet and retreat from problems into her own world. The tendency to be meek outlines Erin's lack of self-confidence, with her hesitating to respond to Charlie when he uses Erin as his dogsbody and confess her feelings for Jamie. Erin hates conflict and tries to avoid them, though when needed, she will speak up, which she does when she is told what happened in the blackout room wasn't real. She can also, on the contrary, show a vengeful side and display hostility towards people who betrayed her trust, such as Charlie, who, as Erin may believe, is working alongside Du'Met.

As a sound engineer, Erin is very knowledgeable in that department. She's passionate about what she does and even tells Charlie that she wants to experiment more with sound design next season. She is so proud of her work that upon learning that the tape with Charlie has been edited, Erin feels ashamed of falling for such a simple trick though Mark excuses her mistake because of the shock.

Besides her lack of self-confidence, the events at the hotel reveal another of Erin's weaknesses: her lack of courage. As noted by the other protagonists, Erin is the most easily frightened out of the crew, causing her to be Du'Met's primary target. Despite not being brave enough, she always encourages herself to move forward and even has her own song that reassures her not to be scared. Even more, she doesn't always cower in the face of danger and is willing to confront a threat, especially if it means to keep others safe. Surviving the night, Erin feels that there isn't that much to be scared of anymore, as she gains new found confidence in her own abilities.

Biography[]

Erin was born on April 28, 1998, having had asthma attacks ever since she was born. At some point in her life, she joined Lonnit Entertainment to be their sound engineer for their show called, "The Architects of Murder". She joined as an intern but only ever did Charlie's shopping and laundry, she also hadn't been paid in months.

On October 26, 2022, Erin was taken on a trip by Charlie to visit and document a replica of H.H. Holmes' "Murder Castle", in order to film their final episode for season one of "The Architects of Murder". She arrived on a remote island in Lake Michigan and was checked into the hotel. But when walls began to move and voices began wailing within in them, she realized she had stepped into a death trap. Her fate would then be decided by the player, in which she would successfully check out of the hotel, or become one of the killer's many victims.

Main Story[]

Act 1[]

Erin introduces herself in a raw season 2 footage of Charlie's show, "The Architects of Murder", she questions if the interview is going to be shown to anyone, describing herself as a private person. Erin watches the final episode of season one of Charlie's show, she, along with her other crew members silently agree that it wasn't good. A phone call interrupts Jamie's opinion on the episode and Charlie answers it. He accepts an invitation to document a replica of H.H. Holmes' "Murder Castle" by a Mr. Du'Met, the crew pack and get ready to go to the agreed location. A limo arrives and Erin gets in the vehicle, she listens in as the others complain on how this trip is similar to the one they had in Topeka. Du'Met asks them to give up their phones as to not allow them from leaking his personal info, Erin is concerned but gives up her phone as do the others.

They arrive at the shoreline of Lake Michigan and Erin grabs her belongings then waits for the ferry, asking Charlie and Mark to be careful as they go to a lighthouse to film some shots. The ferry arrives and the crew all get onboard as they meet Du'Met, Erin smiles as they drive to the island. They arrive on the island and Erin gets concerned, she notices the many dangerous security measures surrounding the island but is reassured by Du'Met. The crew begins to shoot their intro and is abruptly stopped by Du'Met, who ushers them to get to the hotel. As the crew continue on their path, Kate seemingly injures her ankle which causes Erin to worry, Charlie informs Jamie to stay behind with Kate which makes Erin confused. She is later informed by Mark about Charlie's plan. Erin arrives at the hotel to find it in good condition and checks in. Charlie asks for his cigarettes to which Erin points out where it is.

Erin goes to her room and sees a little girl hugging Du'Met, she is startled by Jamie and the two bond, she is invited into her room where they joke with each other. Erin drops her lip balm under the bed and goes to pick it up, she inhales too much dust then gets an asthma attack to which she uses her inhaler. Jamie is concerned but Erin reassures her, the two get closer and Erin moves in for a kiss. Erin is either rejected or reciprocated. The two catches Charlie eavesdropping and Jamie scolds him, Charlie informs them that they'll shoot after dinner but brings Erin with him after telling her about his missing cigarettes. The duo try to locate the cigarettes with no luck, Erin can find Charlie's eviction notice letter in the process but is reassured by him. They opt to find one in the bar but Erin stays behind when she informs Charlie about her asthma attack. She later goes to remind him that it is time for dinner where he rounds up the other crew members.

The crew all arrive for dinner but is informed by Jamie that Du'Met has left the island. Charlie makes a toast which can motivate the crew or estrange them from him. They decide to prepare for a shoot and Erin goes to get her equipment. While prepping, Erin hears a woman's wails from across the hall, she grabs her directional microphone and tries to locate the sound. As she traverses the halls, the lights go out and she is left hearing the screams of people in the walls. She finally locates the wailing, only to discover that it is just an audio recording, she goes to turn it off but a mannequin scares her and causes her to scream. Erin gets an asthma attack and is cornered by an intimidating figure after a wall opens up, he offers her an inhaler to which Erin can accept or attack him. If Erin attacks, she'll get stabbed through the jaw and is killed, otherwise she is safe from danger and the threat leaves. The crew break down the door to find a distraught Erin, she informs them about the figure but assume she's talking about the mannequin. Erin is taken to her room.

Act 2[]

The crew argues about Erin's experience but Erin is adamant about what she saw. Charlie decides to find Du'Met as Jamie follows, Kate and Mark quarrel until the latter agrees. They go to pack their things but as Mark goes to close the door, Erin tells him to leave it open. Erin is left in her room and is determined to prove what she saw was real, she plays back sound recordings about her time in the blacked out room, eventually hearing a man's breathing. She goes to inform the others but realizes the door has now closed and locked. A wall opens up and she has no other option but to head through it. Erin has another asthma attack where she can use her inhaler to calm herself. She continues on her path until she reaches the Silver Ash Institute.

In the institute, Erin finds two animatronics, one's a doctor and the other is a patient, the doctor holds a sharp syringe which he injects into the patient. She can find a voice recording about Charlie's involvement in the murders and Jamie's insulting text messages about her, both shocking Erin. As she further explores the institute, she hears Jamie's voice coming from the rotting animatronic. Jamie warns Erin to hide as she isn't safe, Erin can reveal that she saw Jamie's text messages about her but is scolded. The lights go out and Erin can either hide or run towards the door. If Erin runs toward the door, she opens it to find Du'Met. He stalks towards her which causes her to trip, she is then stabbed in the eye by the animatronic doctor, she is killed. If Erin chooses to hide, she goes inside a closet and narrowly avoids Du'Met as he leaves the room.

Erin stays inside the closet for a moments time before recollecting herself, she exits but finds Du'Met next to her, she runs away and gets trapped in a sealed vault. Kate runs in but before Erin could warn her, Kate is too trapped in another section of the vault. Mark and Jamie watch through two windows as air gets sucked out of both sections, horrifying them. Mark spots a regulator switch and quickly deduces that in order to save one, they have to kill the other. Jamie is forced to make the choice where Erin can beg for her life or tells her to choose one of them. If Jamie chooses to kill Erin, she suffocates and can write a message in blood about Charlie's betrayal. If Jamie chooses to kill Kate, Erin thanks Jamie and escapes out of the vault. Kate begins to suffocate but not before informing Mark about a leak in the window. Mark breaks the window which saves Kate's life.

The four regroup and they tell Erin about Charlie's supposed death, she can tell the group about the recording she found about him and is left unfazed, otherwise she is shocked to hear the news. The crew all agree to head to the lighthouse in order to signal for help, but before they plan further, Kate hears the walls begin to move. Kate runs off and Erin is close behind her, Mark falls through a trapdoor as Jamie gets blocked off from the others. Erin and Kate try to open up the wall but to no luck, they continue forward and can find evidence that the Du'Met they first met was actually Joseph Morello, a true crime author. The duo explore further and are startled by Jamie when she breaks through a mirror on the wall. Jamie informs them that Du'Met has secret passages in the walls, they find a door and hide as Du'Met exits through it. They enter the room only to find a giant nerve center that Du'Met uses in order to traverse around the hotel.

The trio explore the nerve center and find a control area that Du'Met uses to move the walls, they form a plan to trap Du'Met between them. Jamie decides to be bait in order to trap Du'Met much to Erin's concern. Erin tells Jamie to be careful and can confess to her that she loves her, Jamie goes to start the plan as Erin watches on the cameras. Erin can witness Jamie survive or die, to which she is completely devastated. Either way, the plan fails and they flee, Erin fails to keep up as walls begin closing in on them. She is left trapped as Jamie and Kate enter two different rooms.

Act 3[]

Erin waits until one of the doors are opened, she can find either Kate or Jamie dead which causes her to breakdown. Otherwise she'll reunite with the two, they are chased once again by Du'Met and end up on the rooftops. They climb out of a window where Du'Met tries to grab them, Kate yells at Erin to get down from the roof to safety, Erin doesn't want to leave them but is forced to go down. Erin can witness either Jamie or Kate fall from the rooftops and can mourn the loss of Jamie if she was killed. If not, Kate and Jamie are able to overpower Du'Met then pushes him off the rooftop, he is seemingly killed. Erin reunites with the two of them and is relieved to see them alive. As they have a moment of satisfaction on his presumed death, he rises back up and continues to chase them.

They run into a maze where Erin hides. If she fails, she can lose her directional microphone, if not then she'll make it out safely. The trio try to find a way out of the maze, Erin comments on how Du'Met might be selectively mute. They escape the maze only to be surrounded by mannequins that resemble Du'Met, one moves and they run towards a barn, Du'Met grabs an axe stuck on a stump. Erin directs them toward a door at the far end but can get separated, which will lead to her getting hacked with an axe by Du'Met. Reaching the end of the barn, Du'Met corners them on the porch. As he steps onto the porch, it breaks and Erin is separated while tumbling down the slope.

Erin, now separated, continues to the lighthouse where she reunites with Mark and Charlie. Mark asks where the others are but Erin apologizes when she confesses not being brave enough to look for them. Erin directs them toward an entrance to the lighthouse, she however stops Charlie and confronts him about the recording she found about him earlier on. She tries to coerce Mark into tying Charlie up until help arrives, worried that he'll backstab them later on. Mark can follow along and tie him up which later causes his death, otherwise Mark reassures Erin and they all enter the lighthouse. The group can discover false recordings about Charlie's involvement in the murders, Erin apologizes to Charlie and is irritated that she didn't figure it out sooner. Erin and Charlie stay behind as Mark fixes the beacon, reuniting with Kate and Jamie in the process. They hear fighting and discover Mark injured, Du'Met ambushes them but Charlie fights him off with a lamp then the crew runs to the boathouse.

At the boathouse, the crew finds a police officer but he is quickly killed off by Du'Met, destroying his boat as well. Erin can direct Mark to the officer's gun to which he tries to grab or tells him to run instead. Either way, the crew flees and finds a spare boat, they start it up just before Du'Met arrives. Erin drives off with the others and is grateful to be in one piece. Just then, Du'Met ambushes them and the crew have a final standoff, Erin can die in the process after getting impaled with his axe. If she survives, Erin falls off the boat and is safe from harm, Erin will swim towards the mainland.

The End[]

On the mainland, Erin and the others flag down a truck driver on the road, they huddle up together with police vehicles surrounding them.

Charlie[]

Charlie is Erin's boss. As an intern, she acts as a servant or personal assistant for him, carrying his bags and picking up his laundry rather than doing more with the show's sound design. He also does not pay her consistently, and likely considers her last priority in that regard. Despite this, the two have a generally positive relationship, and Erin is polite and cordial Charlie. She also worries what Charlie thinks of her professionalism. If Erin finds the edited tape of Charlie, she believes that Charlie is working with Du'Met, possibly coupling this revelation with the knowledge that the show is losing money. This can lead to her convincing Mark to tie Charlie up outside the lighthouse, causing his demise.

Jamie[]

Main article: Erin and Jamie

Erin and Jamie are co-workers and do not speak much until Jamie invites Erin to her room, where it is revealed that she has a crush on Erin. Erin can reciprocate and kiss Jamie or turn her down. Regardless, Erin is shown to care for Jamie throughout the game, and the two remain friendly even if they did not kiss. If the two survive to the end of the game, they can either talk about their experiences with each other or kiss, with Jamie possibly giving Erin her lip balm back.

Kate[]

Erin and Kate are friends and co-workers, and have the highest relationship with each other. Erin defends Kate when Jamie makes fun of her, believing that Kate is upset about her breakup with Mark. Kate dislikes the way Erin is treated by Charlie and is horrified in the event of Erin's death. Kate entrusts Erin with giving a book to Charlie, and if Jamie dies in the wall trap, Kate tries to shield Erin from seeing the body.

Mark[]

Erin and Mark are co-workers and do not interact much. Mark is protective of Erin when she is frightened by the blacked out room, and Erin is sympathetic over Mark and Kate's breakup. However, Mark tends to side with Charlie over Erin when it comes to their arguments over leaving the hotel and whether Charlie is working with Du'Met or not. He can side with her and tie Charlie up in Lighthouse.
