Enemy of My Enemy is the eighth chapter of Act 2 in House of Ashes and the fifteenth overall.
The player controls Salim (Theatrical Cut) and Jason (Curator's Cut) as the two men find each other in the catacombs.
Catacombs, 0120 HRS, 370 FT.[]
The scene focuses on different shots of the catacombs' hallways, with one of them passed by a vampire. In a room, Jason wakes up from a seemingly dead vampire.
Salim explores a hallway in the catacombs before seeing a light in the distance. He can decide to confront or hide behind the pillars for ambush.
Jason explores a hallway in the catacombs before seeing a figure in the distance. He can decide to advance or shout.
- If Salim confronts Jason or Jason advances without being attacked, both will meet up.
- If Salim hides behind the pillar, he can complete a QTE to charge into Jason.
- If QTE is failed, Jason will notice Salim hiding behind the pillars.
- If QTE is completed, Salim will pin Jason down onto a wall. Salim will then have to complete another QTE to disarm Jason.
- If QTE is failed, Jason will break free by punching Salim away.
- If QTE is completed, Salim will disarm Jason and aim his rifle at the latter.
- In Curator's Cut or Shared Story, if Jason is pinned down, but has a stake, he can complete a QTE to fight back. If succeeded, Jason can afterward be provocative or commanding. Salim can later be threatening or compliant.
The following conversations will play out depend on the previous outcome:
- If Salim doesn't disarm Jason, Jason can ask if Salim is alone or blame Salim for their current whereabouts.
- If the former option is chosen, Salim can be reassuring or ask Jason to walk away.
- If the latter option is chosen, Salim can be reassuring or pin the blame back on Jason.
- Either way, Jason can be provocative or threatening. Salim can later act cautious or enthusiastic about their new alliance.
- If Salim disarms Jason, he will threaten the latter. Jason can either be provocative or startled.
- If Jason is provocative, Salim will tell him how people who acted like that ended up as "worm dirt", to which Jason sarcastically remarks how he's in the company of a war hero.
- Afterwards, Salim can be forceful to Jason or ask him to put their differences aside.
- If the former option is chosen, Jason will ask Salim to keep his eyes on the former.
- If the latter option is chosen, Jason can either comply with Salim or command him to return his gun.
- Afterwards, Salim can be forceful to Jason or ask him to put their differences aside.
- If Jason is provocative, Salim will tell him how people who acted like that ended up as "worm dirt", to which Jason sarcastically remarks how he's in the company of a war hero.
Regardless of the outcome, both soldiers descend down some stairs and can continue to explore the catacombs. They can access a secret room to the right and find:
- Some skulls on an altar. Salim will point out how many people have died down there. Jason will ask rudely if the Iraqis always die like them. Salim can act dismissive or reflective. Afterwards, Jason can be sarcastic or threatening.
- The medical bay through the bars. The protagonists can inspect few things before being frightened by a vampire.
After exiting the room, the protagonists can move on and find a door they need to lift. Whoever has the stake will decide to crawl through the door. Both characters need to complete a QTE to lift the door (no consequences if failed).
After one of them crawls through the door, the latter will shut and some boulders fall which block the door. Salim/Jason will ask if Jason/Salim is alright. Jason/Salim will reassure Salim/Jason and state that he need to find another way out. The one who crawled through comes up with an idea to clear the boulders from his side.
- If Salim disarms Jason and wields his gun, Salim will state how he's uncomfortable being alone. Jason angrily tells him that Salim has the gun and he's left with the stake, before the Iraqi tells him not to underestimate that weapon and that he's lucky to have any weapon.
Jason will ask Salim if he has any idea what the guys are dealing with. Salim can either tell Jason about the vampires or suggest to talk about something else.
- If the former option is chosen, Jason will tell about his disbelief. Salim then states if something looks like shit, smells like shit, and it doesn't need to be tasted to know it's shit, then it's a vampire, before suggesting they need to work together. Jason can either be hostile or supportive.
- If the latter option is chosen, Jason will ask what Salim wants to talk about. Salim then asks to Jason how does his home feel like. Jason can either tell him or be hostile.
Regardless, Salim/Jason will lift the door on the other side and must complete a QTE to hold it for Jason/Salim to pass (failing QTE has no major consequences, but will decrease their relationship). The guys move on and can find a picture. Eventually, they reach a room with a well and can find:
- Ritual Tablet.
- The seventh part of Randolph Hodgson's journal.
- A door in the end. Interacting with it will progress the story.
Jason and Salim will attempt to push open the door. Salim then notices the September 11 marking on Jason's cap, before asking about it. Jason can ask why does he care or tell him about it.
- If the former option is chosen, Salim will tell Jason that he wants a conversation, before Jason telling him they're not friends. Salim can be condescending or respectful.
- If Salim is condescending, he will state how Jason has a lot of anger for a short person, before asking where does he store it. Jason then asks Salim to shut his mouth.
- If Salim is respectful, he will state he has no grievance with Jason, before the latter asking him to switch on the news. Salim then tells a story about a man who built his house on the banks of a river, before stating that the Americans started the war. Jason then asks Salim to shut his mouth.
- If the latter option is chosen, Jason will state the markings are to honor the dead and it's the reason he fights, much to Salim's agreement. Salim can later be respectful or dismissive.
- If Salim is respectful, he will state he has no grievance with Jason, before the latter asking him to switch on the news. Salim then tells a story about a man who built his house on the banks of a river, before stating that the Americans start the war. Jason then asks Salim to shut his mouth.
- If Salim is dismissive, he will tell Jason to believe as much as he likes, much to the latter's confusion.
- If Jason shot the shepherd, Salim will tell Jason about it before saying the shepherd didn't invade the U.S. and he's just a goat farmer. Jason then asks Salim to shut his mouth.
- If Jason spared the shepherd, Salim will tell Jason about it and point out that Jason doesn't consider all Iraqis as enemies. Jason then asks Salim to shut his mouth.
The guys continue to push the door, in which each protagonist need to complete a QTE to push it. While Jason and Salim push the door, a vampire crawls out of a well. Jason/Salim then notices the Vampire as the latter screeches. The protagonist with the gun can fire at the vampire or continue to push the door. Meanwhile, the protagonist with the stake can complete another QTE to open the door.
- If Jason/Salim decides to fire at the vampire, a QTE needs to be completed in order to fire at the vampire, though it proves no use.
- However, if Jason fires at every opportunity he gets to do so, whoever holds the gun will find out the gun has run out of ammunition.
- If Jason/Salim decides to push the door, a QTE needs to be completed in order to push open the door.
Regardless of the decision, the vampire charges at the door and tackles both Jason and Salim. The vampire then attacks Salim, in which the latter must complete a QTE to dodge it (failing it will result in an injury). Jason then must complete a QTE to attack the vampire with a knife. As the vampire looms over Jason, Salim impales the former with a stake, in which both Salim and Jason must complete a QTE.
- If QTE is completed, the vampire will be impaled. Jason pushes the vampire over and gets up.
- If QTE is failed, the vampire will push Salim back and retreats.
After both soldiers get up, Jason suggests they get out of the catacombs.
- If Salim previously wields the gun, both protagonists will grab their respective main weapons. Both protagonists look at each other awkwardly, before Salim stating that he was only borrowing it.
Both guys move on and eventually arrive at the medical bay. Jason then picks up a bunch of dynamites. Both protagonists continue to explore the medical bay and find:
- Mary's corpse behind some cell bars.
- Parasite Notes.
- Autopsy Notes.
- A black onyx inside a box.
- The eighth part of Randolph Hodgson's journal.
- Some bars to other part of the caverns. Interacting with it will progress the story.
Before moving on, Jason leaves a "JK" marking on the ground, to which Salim compliments Jason for having hope. Eventually after moving through the caverns, they find themselves in some large caves with waterfalls, after which they descend down with ropes.
- If Salim found Dar's wallet, he will take it and hold onto it near a waterfall. Jason notices it and asks Salim if the woman in the photo is his wife. Salim can tell Jason about the former's captain or be cynical. Jason can then be contemptuous or apologetic.
- If Jason is contemptuous, Salim will tell Jason that he'll deeply regret his manner, to which Jason says he don't carry regrets.
- If Jason is apologetic, Salim will say how most people are good and they have to realize that before they're gone.
- Salim then throws the wallet into the waterfall and moves on with Jason.
