“ | He's rich, he's a recluse, he's obsessed with H.H. Holmes. Totally sane. I'm sure! | ” |
– Jamie about Du'Met |
Granthem Du'Met, born Hector Waylon Munday, is the main antagonist of The Dark Pictures Anthology's fourth installment, The Devil in Me. He is a serial killer who invites the Architects of Murder TV crew to his hotel, which is a replica of H.H. Holmes' "Murder Castle." He was modelled on Sukesh Khosla.
Appearance[]
Du'Met is never seen without his mask, the mask has a mustache that makes him look like H.H. Holmes. He has a gray bowler hat which resembles the model H.H. Holmes uses, under the hat is a bald patch on the crown of his head.
He has a white plain shirt and has a tie with a polka dot pattern. He wears a brown jacket and has a smock that covers most of his clothing. He wears brown leather shoes, white surgical gloves, and has brown pants.
As the game progresses, he can lose his bowler hat after a fall but puts it back on after. He'll lose his hat once again after getting wet while hanging onto a motor boat. During his final battle with the Lonnit Entertainment crew, he can get multiple blood stains on his mask, jacket, and smock if he is able to murder them.
If Kate and Mark are the only survivors during Reunion, he'll wear Mark's red plaid overcoat with black stripes to disguise himself as the latter.
Personality[]
Du'Met is incredibly sadistic and murderous, willing to kill anyone and everyone who steps foot on his island. Over the course of the game, it is revealed that Du'Met has killed a multitude of people, ranging from children to the elderly. Given the nature of his traps, Du'Met seems to take pleasure in watching his victims kill one another, highlighting his sociopathic tendencies. Due to the design of his traps, as well as his past as an FBI profiler, it can be assumed that Du'Met is highly intelligent and methodical.
Du'Met's violent nature was present when he was a child, brought about by the abuse he sustained at the hands of his mother, Lucinda. While he was able to temporarily suppress these violent tendencies during his tenure as an FBI profiler, he soon began acting upon them after his interactions with Manny Sherman. By the time he faked his own death, Du'Met seemed to have forgone any previous hesitancy about killing, willing to murder whoever stood in his path.
Despite his remorseless and cold killings, secrets found in the game reveal that Du'Met may have had some level of compassion for Lucinda. In spite of her abuse of him growing up, Du'Met oversaw Lucinda's care as she was dying from lung cancer and did not count her murder as apart of his kill tally. Du'Met also may have genuinely befriended Mark and Jennifer Edwards, as he continues to keep a painting of the couple in his lighthouse. There is also a black cat in the lighthouse, with a cat bowl and cat food on the floor nearby. It is unclear if Du'Met cares for the animal or is waiting to fit it with animatronic parts.
Biography[]
Du'Met was born in Silver Springs, Maryland on June 11, 1965 under his birth name Hector Waylon Munday. Six months prior to Hector's birth, his mother Lucinda Munday was abandoned by her lover Clarence, forcing her to raise her son as a single parent. Not able to deal with the challenges of motherhood, Lucinda both verbally and physically abused her son, causing constant attention from school teachers and family doctors.
In spite of his difficult childhood, Hector successfully completed his schooling in 1988, with a degree in psychology, and eventually was recruited into working for the FBI as a criminal profiler. In 1997, Hector led the FBI in the apprehension of serial killer Manny Sherman, better known as the 'Beast of Arkansas'. Having been assigned to interview Sherman and create a profile on his mindset, Hector soon became enthralled by Sherman's explanations for murder, as well as his admiration for infamous serial killer H.H. Holmes.
Around the same time, it was discovered that Lucinda, who was admitted to the Twilight Prairie Nursing Home in 1992 following her failing health, was dying of lung cancer. Learning of his mother's impending death and under Sherman's influence, Hector's mental health began to deteriorate. In January 1998, Lucinda passed away. Although she was believed to have died naturally from her lung cancer, in actuality, she was actually killed by Hector himself after being inspired by Sherman. Shortly after his mother's death, Hector recovered her body from St. Paul's cemetery and turned it into an animatronic.
During a trip to Chicago for a lecture to local FBI agents, Hector abducted and killed two men. In April 1998, he was called back to Chicago to investigate the murders that he himself had committed, having been dubbed the 'Shoeshine Killer'. Realizing that he would soon be caught, Hector decided to fake his death. After stealing a body from a local cemetery and hiding it in an abandoned warehouse, police were called to Hector's apartment where they found another one of his victims, and he killed the first officer to arrive before fleeing to the warehouse. When he was found, Hector set the warehouse on fire, leading investigators to discover the body he hid earlier, believing it to be his due Hector planting his own teeth on the corpse.
Having successfully faked his own death, and now with four victims, Hector briefly paused his murder spree. During that period, he changed his identity numerous times, until he settled on his current persona, Granthem Du'Met. Following Manny Sherman's execution in 2003, Du'Met stole his body and turned it into another animatronic. At some point prior to 2011, Du'Met (as Richard Belknap) met and befriended the couple Mark and Jennifer Edwards, who owned a small island in the middle of Lake Michigan, once the site of a health spa. Du'Met became so close to the couple that upon their deaths, they amended their will to give Du'Met full ownership of the island.
Over the next few years, Du'Met began renovations on the site of the old spa, transforming it into a sprawling estate, nearly identical to that of Holmes' Murder Castle. In 2017, he hired the KD Cooper General Contractors to finish the restoration of the original spa. Soon after, Du'Met secretly killed the seven contractors and framed their disappearances. At this point, Du'Met was counting his kills, After finishing the construction, Du'Met marketed the building as both a hotel and a museum on H. H. Holmes. He also began to emulate Holmes more directly, both in appearance, creating a costume and even purchasing a custom-made mask of his face, and in estate, creating a network of death traps and secret paths throughout the hotel.
By October of 2022, Du'Met had killed 178 people. His most recent set of victims were the wife, brother, and one child of true crime author Joseph Morello, whom Du'Met made pose as him in order to lure the crew of Lonnit Entertainment to the island on the pretext of helping them with their show. Morello did so, under the assumption that Du'Met would allow him and his surviving daughter Bethany to leave the island.

Main Story[]
Act 1[]
Du'Met is first seen driving a limo that takes the unsuspecting crew onto the lakeside but leaves right after. He is then seen on the island, wearing a yellow raincoat, and due to the façade the crew assumes that he is the groundskeeper. At some point he returns to the lighthouse, where an old woman's voice is heard greeting him. Du'Met can be seen by Mark when looking out of a window, commenting on how, "they aren't totally alone". Du'Met is seen watching Jamie through a one-way mirror as she drinks wine. Du'Met stalks Charlie inside the bar while he tries to get cigarettes, he disappears when Erin arrives.
In a blacked out room, Du'Met watches Erin on the cameras, he opens up a wall before cornering her while she is having an asthma attack. He offers her the inhaler to which she can accept or attack him, if she accepts he'll cut a piece of her hair, but if attacked he will stab her through the jaw which will kill her. Either way he'll leave the room after the crew breaks in through the door.
Act 2[]
Charlie steps on a pressure plate, causing a scythe to hang over the groundskeeper. Afterwards, Du'Met comes out of the darkness and holds a knife to Charlie's nose, which he'll cut if Charlie doesn't move, causing him to move back. Either way, Charlie will step off the plate which will let the scythe impale the groundskeeper. The lights cut out and Du'Met along with the groundskeeper disappear when Jamie turns them back on.
Du'Met can reappear when Erin chooses to run to the door in the Silver Ash Institute, ignoring Jamie's advice, she walks backwards as he comes closer until she is suddenly stabbed in the eye by an animatronic. He'll leave afterwards. Otherwise he'll appear when Erin hides in a closet as instructed to her by Jamie, he closes the lights and leaves the room. After which, he goes to watch Kate, Mark, and Jamie on the cameras as they try to find a means of escape. Later, he locks Charlie as he enters the furnace room, lured him with the use of his cigarettes. The room is set ablaze and Du'Met listens in as Charlie screams due to them.
He stalks Kate, Mark, and Jamie as they traverse through the abandoned spa, witnessing them discover what happened to his previous victims. The crew later reunites after Du'Met's vacuum trap fails or succeeds, they setup a plan to which Du'Met quickly tries to stop. He causes Mark to fall through a trapdoor and Jamie to separate from Kate and Erin. He tries to find Mark in his would be cellar but he isn't found, he later searches his basement for him to which he discovers his whereabouts and ties him up, or misses him completely.
Du'Met later goes to his recreation of his interrogation with Sherman, where he plays a past tape during one of those interrogations. He leaves to his giant nerve center where he narrowly misses Jamie hiding. Du'Met brings the crew's belongings and equipment to the waste disposal, where he begins to dispose of the evidence, Charlie is seen hiding to which Du'Met doesn't notice. After a quick look on Mark and Kate's vacation photo, he finally leaves to his nerve center. After finishing his time there, he leaves again to miss Kate, Jamie, and Erin as well, the trio reunited.
He goes to the Silver Ash Institute where he finds Jamie, he chases her and discovers that his own walls begin closing on him. He can kill Jamie or get trapped between the walls, either way he gets out and continues the chase. He sets Jamie and Kate up in the glass trap room, where he forces them to make a tough decision as the wall begins to close on Jamie. They are forced to decide who to kill to save the other, the trap can however fail due to Jamie screwdriver.
Act 3[]
Du'Met chases the trio as they make their way to the rooftops, on them, he chases the now alone Kate. He searches for her with a pipe, she catches him off guard after jumping out of a locker. He continues to chase her but catches Jamie instead, he holds her hostage to which Kate can attempt to save her. Jamie will get killed if she doesn't, otherwise the two overpower him and he falls off the rooftops, incapacitated. After Jamie, Kate, and Erin reunite, they celebrate their victory, but Du'Met gets back up and chases them once again.
He chases them into a maze but looses track, he leaves elsewhere. Du'Met stands idle with a bunch of mannequin lookalikes where he ambushes the ladies, he begins to take chase where he grabs an axe stuck on a stump, they end up at a barn. He can kill Erin after she separates from the other two which horrifies them. But either way, he traps then on the porch but they fall after it breaks, he leaves afterwards.
Du'Met goes to his abandoned warehouse where he hears some rattling, he checks near the freezer and can find Charlie, he guts him then hangs him up on hooks. Otherwise, he'll leave clueless of his existence. He goes to a farmhouse where he enters, he hears some growls and can find the Morello's dog Connie, along with Jamie and Kate where he'll kill the former. But he'll leave when not alarmed. He goes to the lighthouse where he'll find Mark, the latter having activated the lighthouse's beacon, Du'Met attacks him.
The crew reunites with Mark after finding him injured, Du'Met surprises them and they escape, he chases them to the boathouse where the crews finds a state policer officer. Du'Met kills the officer and destroys his boat, the crew runs where they find a spare boat to which they start.
Du'Met catches up to them but they leave after some trouble with starting the engine. Du'Met hangs onto the boat and ambushes the crew as they were beginning to celebrate, he can get defeated or slaughter them all. Du'Met presumably dies after the final battle. But, it is revealed that he's still alive after picking up his mask on some rocks.
Du'Met disguises himself as Mark, Kate then enters the room. Kate hears some noises in the closet to which she can check, she'll find the tied up Mark and run away with him as Du'Met chases them to the boathouse.
If Kate tries to help "Mark", she'll be kidnapped by Du'Met. After they wake up, a video opens with Joseph Morello revealing that he was forced to bring the crew onto the island to save his daughter. Morello tells that Mark must do the same in order to save Kate, or they both will die. In Mark's case, he has to either call or not call the Collins family. If Mark chooses not to call them, Du'Met will kill Kate by injecting acid into her nose and kill Mark with poisonous gas. Otherwise, he'll watch as Mark calls the family, listening in to what he says by the use of another phone, a precaution if he tries to call for help. The End[]
If Kate and Mark weren't the only survivors before Reunion or they weren't caught by Du'Met, Du'Met will be seen in a photo after successfully luring college students onto another hotel that he owns.
If Kate and Mark were the only survivors before Reunion and they were caught by Du'Met, Du'Met will be seen holding a rifle as he shoots Kate and Mark after he reels them back when they boarded the ferry.

Relationships[]
Lucinda[]
Hector was the only child of Lucinda Munday and her lover, Clarence. Lucinda was both physically and emotionally abusive to Hector as a child, something noted by both Hector's school teachers and doctors alike. In spite of this, Hector remained close to Lucinda throughout his life, overseeing her admittance to the Twilight Prairie nursing home. Hector ultimately killed Lucinda, framed her death as death from cancer, and dug up her corpse to turn into an animatronic.
Holmes[]
Hector learned about the life and crimes of H. H. Holmes through his interviews with Manny Sherman. Sherman's stories about Holmes left a profound impact on Munday, who eventually based his identity as a serial killer around emulating Holmes. Munday not only changed his name to Granthem Du'Met (an anagram of Holmes' birth name Herman Mudgett), but additionally recreated Holmes' entire Murder Castle. Du'Met also attempted to emulate Holmes in his physical appearance, dressing as the infamous serial killer, as well as having a custom mask of Holmes' face made for him to wear.
Sherman[]
Hector first met Manny Sherman after leading the FBI in his capture. After being assigned to profile Sherman, Hector soon became enthralled by his philosophy on murder, as well as his stories of H. H. Holmes. Sherman soon took note of this, and began to encourage Hector to act on his murderous urges. While Hector initially resisted Sherman's words (even going so far as to beat him during an interview), he eventually gave in and began his first killing spree. Like with his mother, Hector recovered Sherman's corpse and eventually created an animatronic out of it.
Trivia[]

Secrets[]
- The majority of the game's secrets focus on Du'Met, specifically his upbringing, interactions with Manny Sherman, and the faking of his death.
Facts[]
- Some of Du'Met's aliases take their surnames from the people involved in Holmes' life.
- Ned Yoke and Richard Belknap take their surnames from the maiden names of his wives.
- Benjamin Piteza take its surname from his business partner.
- Benton T. Lyman and Howard Cigrand take their surnames from two of his victims.
- Charles Leacock take its surname from one of his supposed victims, who was not confirmed to be killed by Holmes.
- Du'Met's tendency to turn most of his victims into animatronics was inspired by the 'Imaginary Killer', the first case Du'Met was assigned to while working for the FBI.
- Starting in 2017, Du'Met developed his method of murder. After luring a group of five people to the island, Du'Met would kill three of them in his traps and then catch the other two. Keeping at least one male victim alive, he would force him to pose as "Du'Met" and lure the next group to the island, offering in return the opportunity for that man and his companion to leave. In actuality, after the next group arrived on the island, Du'Met would simply kill the duo from the previous group before starting the cycle again.
Deaths[]
- Du'Met and Vince are the only major non-playable characters in the anthology who cannot die regardless of the player's decisions.
Other[]
- Du'Met shares the same face model as:
- John, James T. Clarke, and Joseph Lambert from Little Hope.
- Dar Basri from House of Ashes.
- Henry Howard Holmes from the same game.
- Robert from Switchback VR.
- Du'Met's full name is an anagram of Herman Mudgett, Holmes' birth name.
- Du'Met's surname may also be a reference to his time with law enforcement. 'Du' is French meaning 'of', while 'met' is an abbreviation of metropolitan. The Met is a common term referring to the metropolitan police in London, so Du'Met literally means 'of police'.
- Du'Met shares his birth name's initials, HWM, with Holmes'.
