Nonsense! There has been no surrender! In the name of God, this is our land! This is where we fight back!

Captain Dar Basri (Arabic: Dar Al-Basri, دار البصري) is a supporting character and the secondary antagonist in The Dark Pictures Anthology's third installment, House of Ashes. He is a former Iraqi Republican Guard who leads a patrol that ambushes the Americans. He was voiced and motion captured by Nabeel El Khafif and was modelled on Sukesh Khosla.

Appearance[]

He wears an Iraqi military uniform with a distinctive beret, and is armed with an AKM rifle. He loses his sunglasses and gets covered in dirt after the earthquake. He will get a bullet wound in his shoulder if Nick shoots him in Slayer which is later wrapped in bandages, and small cuts across his face if Nick shoots the spotlight in front of him in The Signal.

Personality[]

Dar is a patriot eager to defend his country against the American invaders, for glory and rewards. Being a former member of the elite Iraqi Republican Guard before it was disbanded, Dar is an excellent officer and well-versed in military tactics such as ambushes. He has a deep hatred of the United States, doesn't fail to mock them and does everything to undermine their occupation of his country. Dar is authoritarian and does not hesitate to threaten his soldiers shall they be reluctant to fight. He is very bold and reckless, advancing with his troops despite being outnumbered and putting himself in danger to personally lead the ambush. Dar is cold-blooded and doesn't care about his fellow Iraqi shepherds being held captive, even claiming that their lives are not important and implying to Salim that he will eliminate them after dealing with the Americans. Unlike Salim, he does not speak English.

He is hostile towards the Americans even after the earthquake as he tries to kill them at several points in the game. However, he has enough common sense to help the Americans fight the vampires after he finally sees them.

Dar and his wife

Dar and his wife

Dar doesn't seem to bond with his subordinates, as Salim can find his wallet in Slayer and discover that he has a wife, later commenting on how they have known each other for several years and he never knew that.

Biography[]

On May 30, 2003, Dar came to Salim's house to bring him back since American units were seen near the vicinity. Having arrived at the destination, Dar and his patrol ambushed the American units and a firefight was started. Eventually, an earthquake happened and it plunged Dar into the caverns beneath the Zagros Mountains along with his comrades and enemies. When Dar found out the monsters lurking below, he reluctantly joined alliance with the Americans. However, this alliance was short as Dar was killed by the nightmares beneath the mountains.

House of Ashes[]

Main Story[]

Act 1[]

Dar is first seen having arrived at Salim's home with a truck to call him to join the firefight and defend their country. At first, Salim hesitates, but he eventually joins Dar, who both of them with other Iraqi soldiers drive through the Zagros Mountains. Having arrived at a farm raided by American forces, they decide to spy the Americans on a ridge far away. Dar then decides to take a rocket launcher to shoot down a helicopter, which he or Salim will shoot it down, starting a firefight. However, in the midst of it, an earthquake starts, plunging both sides into the caverns below.

After the earthquake, Dar tries to make contact with Salim, only to discover their radios aren't working. Eventually, he finds Eric and Rachel in a buried Akkadian temple. He rappels down and opens fire upon seeing them, chasing the couple until they reach a chasm outside the temple. He can either be alerted to the couple or lose them. If they alert him, he will try shooting at Eric when he tries to save Rachel as she hangs on the cliff, potentially killing him. After seeing Rachel fall into the chasm, he walks away, presumably thinking she died.

Act 2[]

When Jason and Nick arrive at the temple and they discover it has been sabotaged by Dar, who watches them from the distance. They then noticing him sabotaging the spotlights farther into the temple. He meets the Americans again in the caverns as they search for Joey, and ambushes them. The firefight ends after Dar throws a grenade near Nick, who manages to avoid it, but is separated from the others.

Five hours later, Dar meets with Salim in the temple (possibly untying him) before he sees the Americans interacting with the radio outside. Ignoring Salim's warnings, Dar decides to ambush them again, with Salim possibly joining him. If Merwin survived up to this point, Dar shoots him in the head, and can kill Eric if Salim doesn't join and the Americans fail to defend him. After either running out of ammo or being scarred by Nick shooting a spotlight near his face, he retreats into the temple.

Dar is seen again with Salim trying to open the door to the sacrificial chamber. The two discuss what just occurred until they realize the Americans are approaching. They hold the Americans at gunpoint but are outgunned, and a short argument ensues. Eventually, Dar agrees to work with the Americans, though reluctant. When the group is ambushed in the chamber, Dar is injured by a vampire. Dar is inevitably killed by either having his throat ripped out by Clarice if she was brought into the chamber or being sucked dry by the vampires. Later on in the caves, Salim can mention to Jason how Dar never told him about his wife.

Salim[]

Salim is Dar’s subordinate. Dar ordered Salim into fighting back against the Americans even though the war was over, and led the Iraqi unit into battle against the raid party. There is a certain lack of trust evident between them - Dar refuses to believe Salim's story about the demons, and Salim is reluctant to fight the Americans. Depending on Salim's decisions during The Raid, he will quarrel with Dar later or continue following Dar's orders.

Quotes[]

It's an order, soldier, not a request. It is your obligation.

So it's true. Pigs do fly.

Salim: Fuck. There's too many of them. We're outnumbered.
Dar: If we ambush the Americans here, we'll be rewarded greatly for our bravery.
Salim: Will I get a promotion?
Dar: Promotion, Lieutenant? They'll buy each of us a palace!
Salim: What's the use of a palace if I have no money to furnish it?
Salim: Who are these people? They look like shepherds!
Dar: Nobody important lives out here.
Salim: It makes no sense for them to be out here.
Dar: Maybe they're looking for Saddam's hideout?
Salim: You think Saddam is down there?!
Dar: No. But those "shepherds" could know where he is. We can't take the risk.
Salim: What do you mean?
Salim: This is not right!
Dar: Get it together, Salim! We fight fire with fire!
Salim: Not like this! Not here. We'll all die if we fight here.
Dar: Our homeland is being conquered right in front of our eyes. Why'd you join if you're too scared to pull the trigger?
Salim: This is suicide!
Dar: No, Lieutenant, This is glory.
You won't be missed.

Americans! So predictable. When in doubt, plant a bomb!

<In Arabic> You killed my husband. You made me fall into hell. Now, you're gonna pay.

Salim: Funny how you can know someone for years and never really know them. I had no idea my Captain was married.
Jason: That the asshole you were with earlier?
Salim: He didn't make it.
Works for me. One less bad guy to deal with.
