PVT ARTHUR MILLER

DISTRACTED WHILE ON DUTY. POSSESSION OF PROHIBITED MATERIALS

19 JUNE 1947

DETAILS OF INCIDENT (CONTINUE OVERLEAF IF REQUIRED):

At approximately 2030 I was informed by Pvt Perez that Pvt Miller had been seen in possession of a restricted object.

At 2200 I located Pvt Miller, who showed me a cloth bag filled with a set of decorated Bakelite tiles. Pvt Miller had acquired the tiles from a local vendor while our ship had been docked in Harbour Market, Manchuria Port.

I informed Pvt Miller that I would have to confiscate them. Miller protested, giving me a story about their sentimental significance and claimed it would be bad luck if he lost them.

This sounded like superstitious nonsense to me but I felt a little sorry for him. I placated him by explaining that I sympathize with him, as I keep a photograph of my wife and children in my office.

Nevertheless, I made the confiscation, and explained to Pvt Miller that personal items should be kept for when he is off duty.
