All that glisters is not gold, often have you heard that told...
This article is about The Dark Pictures Anthology's first installment, Man of Medan .

Caskets is the fifth chapter of Act 2 in Man of Medan and the thirteenth overall.

The player controls Alex as he, along with Julia and possibly Conrad, tries to follow the captured protagonists.

Main Deck, 2:18 A.M.[]

Alex, Julia, and Conrad (if present) escape from the balcony to the top floor. Julia is confused as they are supposed to follow Fliss and possibly Brad, but Alex says they can get ahead of them that way. After passing through several hallways (possibly finding a memo), the group finds themselves in a kitchen, to which Julia will claim they've already been here and blame Alex for leading them around in circles.

Alex can explore the kitchen and find:

  • Catering Staff Schedule.
  • Moldy food. If Julia accepted Alex's proposal, he will joke about being her personal chef.
  • Human remains in a cupboard. Julia will ask what is there, to which Alex can tell the truth (increasing their relationship) or lie (decreasing it).
  • A kitchen knife. If Alex takes it, Julia will tell him to put it down and Conrad (if present) will tell him that it can be used as a weapon.
    • If Alex says he wants the knife, he will keep it for himself.
    • If Alex says he doesn't want the knife or says nothing, he will give it to Conrad (if present) or put it back down. If Alex puts it back down, interacting with it again will cause him to pick it up.

The group passes through the dining hall, where Alex can find a secret and a picture. Reaching the corridor, Julia cries out and says that she saw something in the shadows, to which Alex can either try to calm her down by saying it was rats or tell her to get ahold of herself. Walking down the corridor, Julia will get angry, claiming again that they are definitely walking around in circles.

After reaching a makeshift chapel, Alex and Julia exchange dialogue about how this place is creepy and are able to find:

  • An open casket with a two-headed human skeleton. Alex can be confused by it or claim that he didn't mean to open the casket.
  • A casket with the nameplate "BRIAN CARTER".
  • A locked casket. Julia asks why they were chained and locked, to which Conrad replies that is one way to end a relationship.
  • A small casket. Conrad will joke that there is Baby Dracula in it with his parents in the next casket.
  • A rat behind a curtain. A severed head will fall from the ceiling, scaring Alex, if the curtain is pulled open. Julia scolds him for trying to scare her, as it is revealed that the head was actually a metal vase.

After passing through another hallway, the group will find themselves in a sick bay. Alex questions why it appears so clean and can find:

  • An aspirin in the bathroom.
    • If Conrad is with them, Alex will give him some.
    • If Conrad was with them but has left, Alex will ask where he went.
    • If Conrad was not with them, Alex will say that he does not need aspirin and joke with Julia.
  • Terrified Corpse in the surgery room.
  • Electrocardiogram Results in the surgery room.
  • A dead patient in the surgery room.
  • A corpse (or the Human Experiment if Alex opened the casket) in one of the beds. It will turn and whisper to Alex as he passes it, scaring him. Alex can then touch it, which causes the corpse to decay rapidly and Julia to scold him.

As they leave the sick bay, they enter Cargo Hold 1.

  • If Conrad was with them, Julia will notice he is gone and start calling for him. Alex can call with her (increasing their relationship) or tell her to be quiet (decreasing it).
  • If Conrad was not with them, Alex looks down into the hole and finds it flooded.

A figure holding a sledgehammer is shown to be stalking them.
