This article is about The Dark Pictures Anthology's fourth installment, The Devil in Me .

Blackout is the twelfth and final chapter of Act 1 in The Devil in Me and the thirteenth overall.

The player controls Erin (Theatrical Cut) and Kate (Curator's Cut) as Erin is stuck in a room and the others try to free her.

9:28 P.M.[]

Blacked Out Room[]

Erin bangs against the door and calls for help, saying she can't see anything. The others arrive and try to force the door open, to no avail. Erin can instruct them to get her out of there or be distressed and say she can't open the door. There are intermittent shots of a night vision camera watching Erin in the dark.

Erin can tell the group she needs her inhaler, resulting in Jamie going to look for it, or insist they help her open the door. Charlie and Mark start trying to force it open as Erin struggles to breathe.

The wall begins to open up, and as Erin approaches the opening, the killer appears. Erin can shout that someone is inside with her or tell him to stay away. He then opens his palm to reveal her inhaler, and she can choose to attack him with the sharp end of her microphone or take it.

  • If Erin chooses to take it, she reaches for it and is grabbed by the killer, who pushes her against the wall and uses his knife to cut off some of her hair. He then drops the inhaler and leaves.
  • If Erin chooses to attack, she must complete two QTEs in succession. Succeeding the first QTE results in the killer pushing her back, and succeeding the second results in her stabbing him in the shoulder. If she stabs him, the killer pushes her away and pulls out the microphone before pushing Erin against the wall and stabbing her in the jaw with her microphone. After Erin dies, he closes her eyes.
  • If Erin does nothing or chooses to attack but fails one of the QTEs, the killer drops the inhaler and leaves.
  • In Shared Story, this sequence is interrupted when the door is broken down.
If Erin is alive, she picks up her inhaler and can choose to either use it or not.

2nd Floor Corridors[]

Kate and Mark hear Erin's scream and rush toward it, meeting with Charlie and Jamie along the way. They reach the door and hear Erin begging for help. Charlie and Jamie reassure here and try but fail to open the door. Kate can either tell Erin not to panic or ask if she is hurt. Mark begins kicking the door, but to no avail. Kate can tell Erin to stay calm or tell her to look for a latch. If Erin says she needs her inhaler, Jamie runs off to find it. Charlie then tells Kate (and Jamie, if still present) to find something to knock the door down as he and Mark try to force it open. If Jamie is still present, she runs off, and Kate can now explore the corridors.

Kate can go forward through the hallways or to the left. She cannot interact with anything except a candlestick after going forward a significant distance. Going past the candlestick or waiting too long results in Jamie appearing and saying she can't find anything before noticing the candlestick and picking it up herself. Otherwise, Kate picks up the candlestick, as the women return to the door. If Kate has the candlestick, she tells Mark and Charlie to move and must complete three QTEs to hit it against the door. If any QTE is failed or if Jamie found the candlestick, Mark takes it, and knocks the door down himself.

Everyone breaks the door down and enters the room.

  • If Erin is alive, they comfort her and help her to her feet. Erin says she was attacked by H.H. Holmes, but the others observe that the dummy is the only other thing in the room. Kate blames Charlie for overworking Erin and causing her to hallucinate things from the show. Mark helps Erin back to her room as she insists that she is not hallucinating and that there was another person with her.
    • In Curator's Cut, she survives only if Kate picks up the candlestick and completes all three QTEs to use it.
  • If Erin is dead, they find the room empty, and wonder where Erin went. Charlie says that she must have gotten lost or wandered into a hidden passageway, to which Kate retorts that it is simply a closet.

It is revealed that the group is still being watched on a screen.

Meeting The Curator[]

The player meets with The Curator in his repository. He stands near one of the bookshelves on the mezzanine floor. Then he notices the player, holding a small red book in his hands and starts with a comment about Erin:

  • If Erin is alive, the Curator says she has shown some signs of "serious pluck."
  • If Erin is dead and...
    • The player was controlling Erin and...
      • Erin kissed Jamie, he questions how Jamie will take the news, just when they seemed to recognize their feelings about each other.
      • Erin did not kiss Jamie, he says it's such a horrible death and she picked the wrong time to find some bravery.
    • The player was controlling Kate, he wonders what has become of her.
      • If Erin kissed Jamie, he says she just disappeared, adding that Jamie has an especially hard time with it since the two of them connected.
      • If Erin didn't kiss Jamie, he says she just disappeared.

The Curator talks about how rude it was for Du'Met not to appear for dinner and that he has apparently left the island. He flies off in his crow form from the mezzanine to the ground floor and fixes his waistcoat. He discusses Charlie's attitude during Dinner:

  • If Dinner ended positively, the Curator says Charlie has rallied the troops and the road ahead is full of challenges.
  • If Dinner ended negatively or neutrally, he says things became uncomfortable after Du'Met's departure and Charlie lost his cool. The Curator also adds that if the group can't work together, they are unlikely to succeed.

The Curator laments that he is just an observer and the player gets to make the choices. He leaves them saying that it's time to get back to things before a protagonist makes a poor choice on their own.
