CHAPTER 5
BREATHING TECHNIQUES FOR EMERGENCIES

In earlier chapters, we looked at how abdominal breathing can help build resilience against anxiety. Practicing techniques such as Tummo or Pranayama for just 20 minutes a day has been shown to build a buffer against stress over time.

But sometimes when sudden anxiety or panic attacks set in, you need quicker techniques for the moment. This is what we'll be exploring in this chapter.

THE 5 FOR 5 TECHNIQUE
Slowly take a deep breath in
Fill your lungs with air
Your abdomen expands
Exhale and your abdomen contracts inwards

- Find a seat that's as comfortable as possible and loosen any restrictive clothing.
- Breathe in gently through your nose for 5 seconds. Try to breath [sic] into your stomach, but don't worry if you can't.
- Breathe out through your mouth for 5 seconds. as if you were blowing out a candle.
- Repeat this for 5 minutes, until you begin to feel calmer.

Note: Some people find it helpful to picture a relaxing environment whilst they breathe. I like to imagine floating through space, discovering new planets far away from Earth. What might your relaxing environment be?

Trivia[]

  • Charlie can pick up the book but cannot open it, likely due to his insistence that he doesn't need it.
  • The line about "tackling their demons face-on" may be a reference to the demons in the anthology's second installment, Little Hope, which the protagonists must confront in order to survive.
  • The book's paragraph about discovering new planets is a reference to the anthology's fifth installment, Directive 8020.
  • One "breathe" is misspelled as "breath" on the second page.
