We each have our own demons. They are ours and ours alone...
This article is about The Dark Pictures Anthology's second installment, Little Hope .

Single-handedly keeping our family together is far from nothing in my book! I could use a little help!

Anne Clarke is a supporting character in The Dark Pictures Anthology's second installment, Little Hope. She was the matriarch of the Clarke family and also one of those who died during the fire in their home in 1972. She was voiced and motion captured by Ellen David and was modelled on Rachel Dobell. Her motion capture performance was assisted by Kerry Norton.

Appearance[]

Anne is a middle-aged woman with a white complexion and wrinkled skin that makes her appear older than her age, possibly due to the stress plaguing her and her family. She has clear blue eyes and long hazel hair, which has been gathered in a big elaborate bun positioned in the crown of her head.

Anne wears a knee-length pink silk padded robe with a tie around the waist and a pair of cotton slippers matched color with the robe. Her only accessory is a gold wedding ring with a shiny diamond on her left little finger.

Personality[]

Anne, like James, wants the family to be united, but due to her husband's neglect, who worries more about the factory, Anne is forced to take care of the children alone. To do this, she used any means possible, such as advice from the book on parenting and Reverend Carson's help. This situation also led to constant quarrels between the couple, one of which in the prologue ended with Anne having a bad mood and ignoring the family to take a break from the madhouse.

Biography[]

Anne was born on February 12, 1931. At some point she met James and on they got married on November 4, 1948. They couldn't have biological children, so they adopted 4 children - Tanya, Dennis, Anthony and Megan. A few months before the fire incident, Megan began to behave rebelliously, so Anne turned to Reverend Carson for help, who became Megan's moral mentor, but it didn't help. To make the situation worse, James began to drink and ignore the family because of the possible closure of the factory, which led to frequent quarrels between the spouses.

January 17, 1972 was a usual day for Anne to spend her time in the house, fighting with James and preparing a bath. However, while doing the latter, a fire started within the house. Anne couldn't escape the bathroom and she suffocated to smoke inhalation.

Prologue[]

Anne is first seen in the bedroom where she is once again arguing with James, complaining about his drinking and problems with Megan. When James says he can't deal with it now and tries to leave, Anne starts yelling at him, accusing him of not being able to cope with anything and forcing her to take care of the family alone. This causes James to snap at Anne and saying that if they had children of their own, none of this would have happened, leaves the bedroom, leaving an angry Anne alone.

After a while, Anne tells Dennis to put his vinyl collection away in the attic before going to the bathroom. As she fills the tub, she is startled by Megan standing behind her. Megan says that she heard the spouses talking about her, but Anne, tired of the argument, ignores Megan and takes her out of the bathroom. As Anne locks herself in the bathroom, she fails to notice that Megan has locked the door.

During the fire, Anne notices the smoke and tries to get out of the bathroom only to find out that she is locked out. As Anne begins to suffocate, she starts banging on the door in a panic and screaming for help, but no one hears her. Anne keeps calling for help with all her strength, but after a while, she, having breathed too much smoke, collapses and drops dead. After a while, Anne is buried in the cemetery with the rest of the deceased family members.

Main Story[]

As the protagonists make their way through Little Hope, they can find secrets related to Anne and her family. At the end of the game, when it turns out that everything was Anthony's hallucination, Anne is revealed to be the prototype of Angela, Amy, and the Drowned Demon.

Relationships[]

James[]

James is Anne's husband. At the beginning of their marriage the two were happy, but a few years later their relationship deteriorated when the factory where James worked was threatened with closure. This led to James drinking and neglecting his family, forcing Anne to take care of the family alone. The two argued often over this, but their last quarrel was very tense as James, tired of hearing Anne complaints about Megan's problems, snapped and said that if they had children of their own, none of this would have happened, which seriously offended his wife.

Tanya[]

Tanya is Anne's adopted older daughter. The two didn't interact in the prologue, but according to Tanya's diary, Anne disapproved of her dating Vince.

Dennis[]

Dennis is Anne's adoptive older son. Their only interaction in the prologue showed that Anne didn't like when Dennis leaves records around the house and that Dennis didn't like when Anne shows no respect for his collection.

Anthony[]

Anthony is Anne's adoptive younger son. The two didn't interact in the prologue, but it was shown that Anthony was worried about her quarrels with James, as well as risked his life trying to save his mother, not knowing that Anne was already dead. It can be assumed that Anthony and Anne were very close, since they were the only ones who really cared about Megan.

Megan[]

Megan is Anne's adoptive younger daughter. Anne took care of Megan and tried to deal with her daughter's rebellious behavior. However, in the prologue, when Megan tried to talk to her mother, Anne neglected her daughter's attention due to being tired of arguing with James and wanting to rest.

Vince[]

It is unclear how Anne felt about Vince as the two didn't interact in the prologue, but it is known that she didn't approve of him dating Tanya.

Carson[]

As shown in Anne's dialogues and her correspondence with Carson, she trusted him enough to accept his help in solving problems with Megan.

Trivia[]

Secrets[]

Facts[]

  • Anthony recreated Anne as an adult сollege student Angela in 2019 and Puritan Amy Lambert in 1692.
    • This also makes Anne the only one Anthony didn't recreate outside of the main timelines.
  • According to the date on her wedding photo, Anne got married at 17.
  • According to Daniel, he knows Angela longer than anyone else. This may suggest that Dennis was the first adopted child and spent a lot of time with Anne.

Deaths[]

  • Anne is the second member of the Clarke family to die in the fire.
  • Anne's death from suffocation by smoke became the basis for Amy's execution and Angela's death from the Drowned Demon.
    • Although the executions and protagonists' deaths are based entirely on the Clarkes' deaths, Anne's case is different as Angela and Amy die from drowning while she dies from suffocation. The reason for this is that Anthony didn't see her die and only knew that she was in the bathroom.
    • Angela’s other unique death, being shot in the neck by Andrew, still involves suffocation with her choking on her blood.

Quotes[]

Anne: Stop it, James. You know I hate it when you don't take the things I say seriously.
James: Come on sweetheart, I do. I just had a rough day today.
Anne: You're drunk. What a surprise.
James: I just caught the game with the guys, honey. That's it.
Anne: That's not it, never is.
Anne: Reverend Carson held her back after prayers today, that's four weeks running... She's not right. It's serious James.
James: You worry too much about that kid, I can't deal with this right now.
Anne: Another surprise! You can't deal with anything. When would be the right time?
Anne: Single-handedly keeping our family together is far from 'nothing' in my book". I could use a little help.
James: Maybe if we'd had kids of our own none of this would be happening.
Anne: That's a real low blow. Don't you get how tough this is for me?
Anne: Dennis, for the ten millionth times will you shift that shit of yours up into the attic!
Dennis: Hey! Some respect. This is a valuable, rare and sought-after collection.
Not now Megan, I'd like to take a bath in peace, take a break from this madhouse for a while.

I can't breathe...
