Archaeologists Missing In Iraq

Twenty-four British archaeologists have gone missing in the Zagros Mountains of Iraq. The Hodgson Expedition arrived in the kingdom in September last year, with the stated goal of "unearthing the relics of Iraq's ancient past."

Led by Professor Randolph Hodgson, the archaeologists were due to return to Baghdad in the spring but ceased sending regular radio reports in December. After conducting many searches of the region, local authorities criticized the secrecy surrounding the expedition, which has made pinpointing its whereabouts difficult. London's Royal Historical Society rebuffed such claims, citing armed rebels opposed to the British occupation as the more likely culprits behind the expedition's disappearance.
